and how the dog seems visibly upset by that.

I know I've experienced this with other non-pitbull breeds as well. Not because they had anything but the calmest, kindest affect and body language but because some parents themselves are totally afraid of dogs, even though their young kids are not. I find that intensely sad. I always try to talk with them, while not pushing too much. Occasionally they will see my own pup in an obedient "sit" with her constantly wagging tail and let the little kids approach her with me supervising. Kids need to know how to approach dogs and I applaud parents like that who push their own fears aside to teach their kids.
