But for me, the BBC's prior series starring Jeremy Brett as Mr. Holmes, has the definitive opening theme (being that Sherlock himself was a violinist, it somehow seems more on brand...)

The bandura was banned and suppressed during Soviet period. The instrument was connected with Ukrainian nationalism. Various musicians were murdered by the Soviets/Russians.
