Dolly Parton says she doesn't think she's earned the right to a nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame so she's pulling herself out of the competition.
The country music icon and philanthropist, 76, said in a statement shared on Instagram on Monday that she is "extremely flattered and grateful" to be nominated but doesn't want the votes to be split because of her nomination. So, she's respectfully bowing out.
"I do hope the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will understand and be willing to consider me again if I'm ever worthy," she said in the statement. "This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock n' roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do."

Lets be fair... I'm pretty sure it's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that does not deserve Dolly.

(29,668 posts)I have to say, I saw lots of griping about her nomination (but I saw lots of griping about the GoGos, too, so I dismissed it because there is a contingent of people that don't seem to want women nominees or anything softer than death metal to be represented).
But trust Dolly to find the most graceful solution.

(18,366 posts)Definitely country and pop worthy. Just like Mark Knopfler shouldn't be in the Country Music Hall of Fame even though a good amount of his later music could be characterized as country. Also those left out of the CMHoF: Bob Dylan, The Allman Brothers, Jim Croce, and John Denver.
She is the reigning queen of country though.
How Charlie Daniels made it does make me wonder.

What she is, is gracious and humble.

(18,366 posts)Part of making the HoF is performing your own original material (even if it is written by others). There is no doubt that she could make pretty much any song better.
Even the Help cover is a country music version.
The country music singers that made it to the R&RHoF are, in general, from the prior generation where country was one of the influences branching into rock music. I would contend that Johnny Cash might even be on the fence, and his music had more influence to the rock sound than Partons.

(21,898 posts)It's a fan vote and anyone can vote once a day... An internet poll. I could easily be talked into that changing to a set of rules but as far as it goes, I still think she is too good for them. The internet decided we were both wrong... Then Dolly decided for everyone for her own reasons... I'm good going with that

(11,846 posts)And she doesn't want to be a part of it. Good one, Ms. Parton. You don't need the HOF to celebrate your many accomplishments. You can do it without them.

(18,366 posts)While I am not the biggest fan of his music, the Jackson Five and his solo work has been influential on mainstream rock not to mention some of the most successful selling music in history.
I guess I have softened my opinion on the Hall once Rush and Yes got in. Still Chris Squire should have been playing Roundabout at the induction and not Geddy Lee - the Hall waited too long.

(14,901 posts)Michael Jackson was a Soul, R&B, and a Pop singer.
Hiring Eddie Van Halen to solo on one of your songs does not make you a rock act.
