(2,228 posts)But not like the sixties and early seventies when it was so popular.
Nara Leao, Gal Costa, and Rita Lee do some nice Bossa Nova songs.
I've also developed a love of Samba from listening to Clara Nunes.
They're all on youtube!

(649 posts)... one of the most remarkable TV shows I have ever seen. This is in Portuguese, unfortunately with no subtitles, but regardless, I was riveted for the entire 90 minutes the first time I saw this. Subsequently, I was able to d/l a subtitle file to add to the video.
The entire interview is in extreme closeup, and you never see or hear the interviewer. Just a black background. It is very intimate.
Tell me if this puts a smile on your face ... but it's worth scrolling back to the beginning for the entire show.
She is accompanied by her working trio at the time ... amazing rapport. There is a LOT of music in this video, all amazing.
Ladeira da Preguiça: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=4m48s&v=j4NfM7e_QkU
Too bad YouTube does not have a subtitled version ... she talks in detail about her life, and about her connection to the roots of modern Brazilian music.
Watching her face is like watching the weather pass.

(649 posts)... I tried to link to a specific time in the embedded video, but DU doesn't allow that. I did find a workaround, which now works, but the video is now not embedded. If you didn't catch Ladeira da Preguiça, please go back and try the revised link ... it is worth it!

(649 posts)re: the Elis Regina interview, there are links to each specific song in the youtube video description. She performs 17 songs with her trio! This is great if you don't wish to watch an interview in a foreign language, but as I mentioned, just watching her is riveting.
She is so young in the video, before she started having major problems.

(649 posts)Wonderful stuff here, from Disney in 1942.
This is from a two-part series, actually part of a large series of South American cartoons that Disney did for the State Dept. The first part seems to be unavailable on youtube now, but this is great.
Blame It On The Samba:
Featuring the Dunning Sisters and the awesome Ethel Smith on organ. The animation is psychedelic, as in Fantasia.
