The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm finally off call. What a relief.
It was a light week; I only received five calls or so. Even though out-patient call is telemedicine only, and I don't have to get dressed and go somewhere, it's still a tough week to get through. You can never really relax, knowing a call could come at any time, often in the middle of the night.
And of course, one can't have a drink in order to unwind...
But I'm done now. I'll be hoisting a few tonight in the Lounge with my beloved Loungers. Hope to see you there...

I worked for after getting out of the Air Force, I once had a mom call at 3 AM wanting to know if she could make an appointment for her child. I told her she would have to call the office at 8:30 when the phones opened, as there was no way for me to book an appointment from my kitchen.
She was in the hospital with pneumonia, and was worried about her child, which was understandable, but I did wonder if she thought I was at the office, sitting up all night just waiting for the phone to ring.

(66,328 posts)Same time, even. Some guy called, with no adverse symptoms of any kind, but just because he "had some questions about COVID-19." He must have thought I was, like you, just sitting around waiting for the phone to ring, instead of trying to get some much-needed sleep for a busy day of clinic the next day.
I've said it a million times: my organization needs nurse triage like crazy so hammerheads like this guy can be told firmly that that kind of thing can wait until business hours.

(6,360 posts)I'm retired now. HVAC tech for a school district... two weeks of being on call.
Winters were the worst. No heat calls.
Two weeks of being available 24/7.
I enjoy your relief!!
(And I think a little Bailey's in your coffee would be fine this morning. )

Tonight: probably chilled lemon vodka...

(13,895 posts)Lots of hospitals in my area have eliminated call and have put in a permanent shift. We still had back up call with relieved some of the anxiety. Still sometimes the back up person would come in "compromised" both MeDical and technical .......not cool..
