(10,212 posts)I know this was a funny joke but at least you tried to save a spider.
A little farmer trick about spiders:
In many animal pastures, flies and biting insects are a terror for the herd animals. I've seen large animal herds chased away from good pasture because of flying insects. And when insects lay their eggs on an animal it can be deadly if not treated.
But if you allow the grass to grow longer and leave strips of trees and underbrush to grow in between the pasture, the flying insects are noticable reduced. Seems millions of spiders are wiped out when grasses are kept short and there is nothing talker than 8 inches. But put in habitat for some spiders and they take care of a lot of insect problems. I love spiders.

(17,035 posts)I have a colony of crickets in the basement, and once gets up here once in a while. Plus spiders. I really did capture a dust bunny last night. My eyes are playing tricks. lol I laughed at myself.
That is a good idea about keep some woodland and letting the grass grow. Years ago, we lived in the country and had a long gravel drive. I'd walk the kids up to catch the bus, and always say spiders webs on the wild asters. We had ladder spiders, which were pretty, and lots of other spiders that weren't very pretty, but were efficient

I usually toss the crickets onto the basement landing. Spiders go outside or into the trash can. Around here, very slight chance of them getting injured in there.

(10,212 posts)I was pulling up some garden fabric that I had left to overwinter and saw these bright beautiful spiders bright red and glossy black. The red was like a pretty little figure 8, you could even call it an hour glass. Yup, black widows, about 15 of them. Yikes.
I left it until the next day when the spiders had moved out. I never knew black widows were so pretty.
Since then, I've stopped picking up spiders and handling them. And I now wear thick leather gloves when pulling up garden fabric.

(17,035 posts)You're lucky you didn't get bit. Years ago. my daughter found one in the garage at her old house. She couldn't believe they were in this area.
Some of my facebook friends post pictures of incredibly beautiful insects and spiders. The diversity is amazing!

(17,035 posts)is getting repulsive to me. I would still kill some bugs-flies, cockroaches and meal moths, but luckily, don't often get them in the house.
I'm getting better at sparing ants and wasps :/

on the grass after rainstorms so they dont dry out and die on the sidewalk or driveway.
Flies, mosquitos, and stinging insects do not get any mercy.

(153,193 posts)I too evict the occasional critter from my tub - I don't mind that they exist, I just don't want them living with me....I trap them under a glass and take them outside.
