and then threaten to break our heads if we ever started smoking.

Of course I did. Finally quit when my mom died of lung cancer.

I was born with a clubbed foot, probably because my mother and father smoked like freight trains. I had a sister that died at birth and I never thought about it, but that may have been smoking related too. When we went on family trips in the car the windows had to be down if you wanted to see out. The whole inside world smelled like an ashtray.

I was probably addicted to tobacco long before I started smoking. As far as the candy cigarettes, I liked the white chalky ones with the red tips. There was also, as I recall, candy chewing tobacco. The tobacco industry had the best marketers in the world. I watched a lot of the Greatest Generation die from smoking related illnesses. I quit a long time ago; quit smoking and drinking at the same time. I probably wasn't pleasant to be around for the first few months.
