The five-bedroom, roughly 3,000-square-foot Brentwood home listed just as her Carmel vacation home sold for well over its asking price.

unless the buyer is inordinately sentimental about it having been owned by Betty White.

Modernizing buildings usually has a much smaller environmental footprint.

My brother is a contractor who has frequently worked with wealthier clients. He's ripped out his own work, built to last a century, in as little as ten years -- entire bathrooms and kitchens -- by fickle clients who want to keep up with the latest fashions.

This all arises from the disparities of wealth in the U.S.A..

Very wealthy people are literally trashing the planet with their money. Meanwhile, as a society, we can't even build simple, safe, secure, and robust housing for the homeless.

For those of us in my family who do make money (I'm not one of them) we all have a fierce altruistic streak. My wife's family is similar. For every windfall we try to spend some time, money, teaching, mentoring, etc., to "pay it forward."

From what I know of Betty White she too was trying to make the world a better place.

People ought to respect that.

If I was so wealthy I could buy Betty White's old house, sure, I'd make it my own, but I'd also respect the history and try to minimize my outputs to the landfill.

it was recently razed and a much bigger place is going up.

Same directly across the street from Aretha's old place where one of the Andrews sisters once lived. A lovely home. Torn down and now Slash lives in the new place, a home with far less charm.

I'm with you on Betty White. What a beautiful human being!
