Ms. Marvel's Best Review Comes from Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai
The latest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe received exceptionally high praise in a "Thank You" letter to Ms. Marvel courtesy of none other than Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai.
On June 7, the official Marvel Studios Instagram posted a photo of a handwritten letter from Yousafzai. The letter praises the series for its representation of life as a Pakistani immigrant and its "young superhero whose powers connect to her heritage."
Yousafzai is a Pakistani human rights advocate with a focus on women's education who, at the age of 17, became the youngest Nobel Prize laureate upon being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her activist efforts. In 2009, Yousafzai's BBC Urdu blog Gul Makai detailed her life in the Swat Valley under Taliban rule. Yousafzai quickly became a prominent figure in the political sphere, and in 2012 was the victim of an assassination attempt during which she was shot in the head. Yousafzai was eventually transferred to the UK once her condition improved, and from there she has continued her work as an advocate and activist.
Ms. Marvel is based on the comic book superhero Kamala Khan, created by Sana Amanat, G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie. Kamala first appeared as a cameo in 2013's Captain Marvel #14 before making her proper introduction as the superhero Ms. Marvel in 2014 in Wilson and Alphona's "Garden State of Mind," the massively oversized All-New Marvel NOW! Point One. The Disney+ series stars Iman Vellani, who is a lifelong Marvel fan in her own right, as the titular teenage hero.
