After fleeing Trump's America, East Van teen rides UBC scholarship in pursuit of her dreams
From being barred from attending school in Kurdistan to a full-ride scholarship at UBC, its been a wild and wonderful journey for Ashki Shkur.
The Grade 12 student at Britannia Secondary in East Vancouver chose the Point Grey campus over competing universities and scholarships, beginning down a road that starts with studying medical biology, immunology and physiology, leading, she hopes, to one day becoming a surgeon, her lifelong goal.
This is a dream I never thought would be possible, Shkur said. We left our country mainly because of me, my education was under threat because I wasnt allowed at school anymore and my dad was like, We cant let this happen.
My only dream at the time was only to go back to school. When you think about where I came from, I didnt even speak English, and now Im going to UBC, its just
