It was supposed to be mine, but I still prefer my ten year old car, so my husband and the dogs have been breaking the new car in for me.
What I hate about the fancy new one is the stupid touch screen. What idiot thought that was a good idea?
With my old car, if I want to adjust the heat or radio or anything, I can keep my eyes on the road while I reach over and feel for the knob or switch.
With the touch screen, I have to take my eyes off the road if I want to use anything on the touch screen.
I would pay extra to get the old knobs and switches put back on my new car, but I'm pretty sure that isn't an option.
But yes, I like the screen when I need to back-up. But it's not worth losing the knobs and switches, IMHO.

(38,492 posts)You bet it's not. Touchscreen technology is WAY cheaper than physical, mechanical knobs and switches.

(17,426 posts)I would like to buy a brand spanking new pickup with vinyl floors, crank windows, standard stick shift with big old crooked stick coming up through the floor, knobby radio, no touch screen, no backup camera, etc.

All I can say is that I hope you get used to your new car.

(35,337 posts)The truck has power windows and door locks, that's about it. Last winter I had to pull the SUV off the road to
figure out how to turn the rear window and mirror defroster on. I have only put 500 miles on my truck this year
because it uses twice as much gas. What is the point of a key-less ignition, you still have to carry the key fob around?
Sticking a key in a hole is really too much work? Two things I like about the newer SUV is adaptive cruise and the backup
camera.

(24,292 posts)First car I had with keyless ignition there was a key hidden in the fob that could open the trunk where a cable could be pulled to open the door. You will get low battery warnings on the dashboard that will give you time to change the battery in the fob. Instructions and the battery type are in the owner's manual. Batteries can be gotten at everything from most grocery stores to a hardware or drug store. Changing it is easy with the instructions in the manual. My experience with four keyless cars is that the battery lasts 2-3 years.
Do not go to the dealership to have this done unless you want to pay exponentially more than doing it yourself. Some dealers are honest, but some are notorious for charging a lot for the battery you can buy for less than $5, and sometimes even telling people the fob needs to be "reprogrammed" (it doesn't) and charging over $100 to do essentially nothing.

(10,885 posts)the problem is that each one has three or more purposes/operations, depending on whether you push it, pull it, twist it, or whatever. Rarely do I use a knob without having to look it up in the Operator's Manual. What a PITA! Today's "knobs and switches" aren't like the knobs and switches of old!

(7,781 posts)They both have a screen and a full set of knobs and switches, they're the beat of both worlds. Cars with nothing but a screen are strictly for the birds.

(6,261 posts)How the hell can this technology, with its lack of tactile feedback, be anything but dangerously distracting?
As a cyclist and a driver I've noticed a big increase in distracted drivers the last few years. Lots of reasons, of course, starting with cell phones but those touch screens must play a big role also.
Hell, I still drive a car with manual transmission; I like to stay involved in the driving process and not tune out.
Mr.Bill
(24,292 posts)but there is still a knob for the volume, and one for tuning stations. I can also change preset stations and volume with convenient buttons on the steering wheel. Where the touch screen must be used is settings for bass, treble and balance/fade on the radio, and other such things and that is annoying.

(15,808 posts)Can't change driving mode, but I can turn on/off the air conditioning, change the radio, map a location, answer a call (or not), have a text read to me (or ignore it). All without touching the screen.
On edit: new Volvo EV uses Google assistant.
