TV and film tropes.

We don't watch all that much TV, but I've been noticing for a long time that some of the "images" we see all the time don't make any sense and I'm finally getting around to commenting.

For instance, when a character enters a house during the day and uses a flashlight to look around even with the windows wide open. Or last night, we were watching Stranger Things on Netflix, and, in the first episode, a character enters a shack on their property and it's dark inside even though a light bulb is glowing.

Another one I love is in offices, when the entire building is dark and they have lamps in the room. They can have two or three, but the room is still fairly dark.

And the one that I find hilarious is when the detective goes to a building downtown and always seems to find a parking space right in front of the door. Having grown up in San Francisco, this one takes the cake for me.

1. No offense but if you don't watch TV much, guessing you didn't spend much on it either?

Or ... is it perhaps fairly old?

Being able to see stuff well even in low-lighted scenes is one of the big reasons to buy a higher end TV. I mean, if one cares about that sort of thing.

Might play w/some of the adjustments on it ... TV might be in a mode that's inherently 'darker'

4. Er... no, those scenes are intentionally supposed to be dark.

That was my point.

And the TV is a 54" flat screen about two years old and works just fine.

6. Lighting seems about right to me in the scene where Will is in the shed

In S1E1 of Stranger Things. It's one bulb with nothing to concentrate the lighting below it, and the walls are mostly dark-looking which would limit reflection.

There's one quick bit where the lighting behind him seems a little dimmer than it maybe should be given the lightbulb that's supposedly shining overhead.

To me looks like the scene alternates a little between using the overhead bulb for lighting vs. using a filtered spotlight to illuminate Will, possibly with the bulb off.

So if that's what you mean, then yeah ... that does happen

sound waves travel through the vacuum of outer space (except in 2001: A Space Odyssey).

In the future of The Expanse, you can even hold your breath for a couple of minutes and survive in outer space without a helmet! I enjoyed the series overall, but boy that stuff drove me crazy.

always enter a dark room and move around, while shining their flashlights. Turn on the damn light! You walked right past the switch.

Everything is a trope, until it disintegrates into a deconstructionist contest of out-clevering each other.

Some observations are fair game, I agree, but it gets ridiculous in very short order, with "tropes" like:

"Film opens with credits."
"Female lead has a dog with a collar."
"Male lead sleeps with socks on."
"Family has a bowl of fruit on the table."

Disclaimer: those (probably) aren't actual tropes on the site, but a quick perusal of the index shows that the flavor is about right.

I'd kind of like them to highlight any work of fiction since The Epic of Gilgamesh that wasn't completely filled with what they identify as tropes.
