The old estimate was about 170,000,000,000. You'd think that would be enough, huh? But this number... I dunno. Whatever it is that we mean by "sense of wonder", whatever makes us gaze at the night sky with awe--this, to me, is the essence of that. There is a sheer numinousness about this fact that makes me feel both utterly insignificant...and, at the same time, oddly proud of our half-civilized hairless simian species. That we, despite our obvious limitations, painted the Sistine Chapel, wrote Hamlet, walked on the Moon...and can see into the very heart of the cosmos, and make determinations like this...
