growing up not poor, but certainly not rich, my mom had to come up with creative things sometimes to feed me at lunch.
two things come to mind.
Baked beans with mayo sandwich. I still love them to this day.
and
tomato pancakes. replace the milk with tomato sauce and you serve it with salt/pepper and butter.
have at it.

(21,898 posts)In a pot, put in equal amount of Coke and ketchup, enough to cover the amount of chicken you plan to cook. Crush in garlic to taste, onion powder to taste, a bit of salt and pepper and a generous helping of your favorite hot sauce (Cholula). Bring to a boil while stirring constantly, then reduce to a low heat. Add the chicken (I prefer legs, wings and thighs) cover and cook until the chicken falls off the bone. Remove bones and serve over rice.

I'm not great at measurement. I filled up a couple quart pan 1/2 the way with water and add a bout 4 tablespoons of caraway seeds. Add salt
Bring the water with caraway to a boil, I let it boil for a few minutes then turn off and when cool enough strain the caraway seeds out. You are making a tea of caraway.
Make dumplings with flour, egg, water and salt to form something with the consistency of uncooked bread.
Turn heat up under the caraway soup and drop dumplings in from the mix. I just use a knife and cut away little pieces and stick the knife in the water so they drop off.
Then in another little saucepan melt a few tablespoonfuls of butter until it begins to brown, add some more flour and then put it in the soup to thicken it.
It should turn into a brownish soup with dumplings. You'll probably have to add more salt.
Eat. You might sweat a little but you will feel better!!! This is very old and from my eastern European grandmother.
