It has finally happened. I sold my first screenplay

26. An option is "we'll give a small part of your fee first," retain legal rights, then pay you when

we have 100% funding. Options lock a writer into a binding contract for a certain amount of time. If funding is secured, you get the rest of your money. If not, you keep the small portion but the piece is dropped from development and you're back at square one.

Options are used two ways, one good, one bad.

Good: Writer has money in pocket and the producer works hard to get funds together to make it.

Bad: Writer has money in pocket, but the producer has no interest in doing it but does not want others to do it, so they kill it and dry up a writer's progress.
