In Hawaii I've had encounters with sea turtles where they come within a foot or so of me and look me in the eye. What an honor. I try to keep a distance of several yards out of respect, but they are often friendly sorts when they're used to snorkelers and swimmers and don't seem to worry about maintaining the same boundaries.
