The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy humble introduction
Im Gregory and I thought I would introduce myself. I live in the village of McFarland, WI., which is a suburb of Madison.
I am a liberal because I love all people as a baseline, until proven otherwise. I hate racism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, misogyny, xenophobia, Christian nationalism, and Trumpism.
I am 67, retired, an atheist, and a former system programmer at an insurance company that processed Medicare, Tricare. VA health care, as well as general health insurance.
The only thing on my bucket list is to destroy fascism, Trumpism, and those destroying our clean air and water, and exacerbating climate change. I do this for our children and future generations. Being part of the generation that has done much of the damage, I feel obligated to speak out and do what little I can to change society for the better.
I thank you all for the nice words of welcome.

(24,906 posts)I am also an Atheist. Did you go to Catholic school like me? I always ask that of any Atheist I meet. The majority of them seem to say yes.
An Evangelical Christian I used to work with told me Catholic school is where they train Atheists.
G2theD
(608 posts)That for me was about 8 years old. I couldnt believe that these stories could be true.
I was an agnostic for a long time (covering my a$$) but eventually figured it out. I am not averse to some form of spirituality, but I dont think about it. I figure Ill find the truth when I die - or not.
Contrary to the evangelicals, atheism does not lack morals because we are Godless heathen. I seem to be more in line with the teachings of Jesus than most of these Christians that worship an orange blasphemer.

Wisconsin used to be very progressive. It seems we now have lots of Trump acolytes. Madison and Milwaukee are generally liberal, but up North is another question.
Glad you are on our side!

(608 posts)I remember everyone in my family waking up and going out in the hallway wondering what just happened. It was the bombing the Army Mathematics Research Center in Sterling Hall on the UW campus. I was 15 years old but will never forget it. Robert Fassnacht was killed in the bombing.
That's the event I was referring to. I have a DVD I helped fund on Gofundme called, "The War at Home" and a good deal of it was footage from the protests and the bombing in Madison.
I could never understand bombing anything in the name of Peace, although I was very active in the movement. That action was a complete, bloody blemish on the peace movement.
Oh well.....water under the bridge. Again, welcome. Happy to have you here.

(608 posts)Trump brought a lot of racists and misogynists to vote, many for the first time because they finally found someone that had as much hate as they did.
Now these weak-minded ignoramuses are in a cult they will not be disposed to getting out of. They literally brainwashed themselves by seeking out the news and information sites that validated their hatred and made them feel they finally belonged and were somehow smarter than the libs that theyve hated for so long due to their education and better vocabularies which made them feel inferior.
The Trump cult can not be changed by facts or logic and reason. They must be completely destroyed politically so they go back to their former pathetic existence.
Some republicans may not fit this mold, but if they voted for Trump twice, they are at least as bad.
The press has to do better than representing both parties as equal sides of the same coin. Instead of saying Donald says its raining and Joe says its sunny, they need to stick their damn heads out a window and tell us the truth!

(172,821 posts)I lived in Madison when I was very young, my dad was stationed at Truax Field....Madison was my favorite pitstop as a GI brat, I loved it there
Loved watching the F-16s taking off and landing at Truax. Once they had the B1 bomber and the
F-117 Nighthawk (stealth fighter) and some other neat planes on display and you could look inside of some of them.
Ocelot II
(131,199 posts)Minnesotan here but originally from WI; Dad went to U of WI, brothers went to Ripon and Lawrence. Some of the family still lives in Door County on the same land where my 3x great-grandfather first settled in the 1850s upon immigrating from Norway. So we're OLD Wisconsin. It's been upsetting to see much of the state turn into a right-wing hellhole under Scott Walker, and with RonJon replacing Russ Feingold. At least you still have Tammy Baldwin. I hope it can be re-civilized.
I hope you like cats. The Lounge is full of cats.
I still cant believe Russ lost. My father grew up on a farm in Luxemburg WI (German). Until he left for WWII anyway.
I like cats, but my wife is allergic (to many things!) and I am more of a dog person anyway.
Whatever happened to Ocelot I?
Ocelot II
(131,199 posts)even though they say an ocelot can't change its spots, they can change their user names.
We also like dogs in the Lounge. If you have a dog and mention it in any way, you are obligated to post a photo of it. That's a rule.
You also have to get Feingold back, or at least get rid of RonJon. God, he's dumb.

Isnt that the truth. We are going to hell in a hand basket, or should I say handmaiden?
We need to get liars off the SCOTUS. Plus put at least 2 more on the court, preferably 4 while Biden is president. The court has gone rogue and fascism is creeping into all the cases brought to the court by terrible people calling themselves Christians.
