A picture of a beluga whale hugging a fur seal hit the social media and instantly went viral. The cute picture of togetherness was shared on Reddit and immediately went viral on all other mediums. However, as much as we adore the moment of love between the Beluga and fur seal, it is too good to be real! The fact that it was a fake picture was highlighted on the social media and has broken various hearts, but the fact remains that whales and seals are not the hugging type of sea animals. The beautiful capture of the two animals getting along and being together was actually a work of great editing skills.
The picture of a white beluga whale being embraced by the fur seal in the ocean was shared on Reddit with the caption, “The incredible shot showing the rare embrace between a Seal and a Beluga Whale.” However, the sad reality is that whales and seals are not prone to hugging and more importantly the two creatures could not occupy the same ocean at the same time in real life. The fur seals are mostly exclusive to the southern hemisphere while the beluga whales are found in the exact opposite direction at the northern hemisphere.
Marine biologist Robert Harcourt from Macquarie University spoke to ScienceAlert about this picture and clarified, “There are literally no fur seals where belugas are from. All seals living in the Arctic belong to the earless seal family, Phocidae, also known as ‘true seals’. Beluga and many true seals co-occur. They might feed on the same prey at the same time, but interactions would be limited to that or maybe swimming alongside each other – certainly not ‘hugging’.”
This explanation made it clear that there are only two ways that the Beluga whale and the fur seal came together. Either by being put together in an aquarium or on a photo editing software. The natural background in the background clearly shows that this image is a work of photo editing and sadly can never be a reality. The artistic picture was made by award-winning Ukrainian artist Elena Vizerskaya, and millions have appreciated the photo-manipulation and editing that made the picture look real.
