Will our car insurance premium go down because we now only have one driver??

My husband won’t be driving anymore due to mental problems, and I will be the only driver…….will this make a difference in our premium?? Thanks.

Thank you so much, I hope a little lower premium would be nice eh?? a kennedy Aug 2022 #7
Also approach it from the angle of "fewer miles being driven" if you can. That worked for me. dameatball Aug 2022 #4
Regardless, the change should be reported. padfun Aug 2022 #5

Answers will vary slightly from state to state. But the general rule is that if you have a licensed driver in the house, it doesn’t matter whether they drive or not. If they are not a licensed driver (surrendered license vs just not use it), you might be able to get a better deal.

Will the car be driven much less often as a result of your husband no longer driving? If the number of miles driven per year will be significantly less, that could reduce your premium a little. If your husband has any recent accidents on his record, that could be a factor too. Check with your insurance company. I'm sure they can tell you more than I can.

Also, if you haven't done so in a while, get a few quotes from other car insurance companies. I did that a few years ago and was able to save hundreds of dollars a year!

My late husband was not able to drive any longer for the last several years he was alive.

He had macular degeneration and was able to see out of one eye only. The sight in the one good eye he had left he was getting injections into for the last 13 years of his life.

He (and I) both thought he should give it up as it simply was not safe any longer.

The premium on the automobile policy went down a little bit but not much. They kept a close eye on the household and kept asking if he was driving still. He did not have a license, just a State of Calif. ID.

I hope your premium goes down. That is perhaps one good thing about the situation I guess.

Take care a kennedy!

One less driver

Fewer overall miles

If your carrier won't budge, shop around.

Car insurance is one subject where I dot the I's and cross the T's. You don't want to have any future claim have problems of its own.

In Calif, the law is 10-25. 10 property and 25 Personal damage. I step it past 25-50 and buy the 50-100. It costs only about $22 a more per month but you don't have to worry about these more expensive cars out there.
