(47,037 posts)I agree they can be adorable.
But their antics and hi jinx are beyond the pale sometimes.
(I have a small Maltese who sits on my lap and obeys orders.
Never does anything strange. Just adores me. )

(21,448 posts)Constant surprises and entertainment, although sometimes the "entertainment" is breathtaking or heart stopping.
When Ember was a kitten, I was constantly running interference to protect her from consequences of her adventurousness that she couldn't anticipate.
At 6 years old, she has mellowed with maturity. Her antics are not so breathtaking any more, but are still surprising and amusing.
As for obedience, the concept does not exist in a cat's mind. If you try to enforce such a foreign idea with them, they will quickly set you straight.

(47,037 posts)My little dog is entertaining to a much smaller extent.
But nothing dramatic like cats.
I can see how cat owners would find my little dog boring.
Interesting about the obedience thing, my dog just loves to do what I ask her to do.
Which frankly isn't much. She is a good girl and just follows house rules.
I think cats would be too much excitement for me.
But I confess I love to watch cat videos.

(21,448 posts)When they do something, they are cute and funny rather than alarming.
As a kitten, Ember was the most hyperactive, devil-may-care cat that I have ever had. She wore me out daily. When her vet told me that a vaccine shot might make her sluggish for a few hours, I said, "Is that a promise?"
But cats can be cooperative. Never obedient, just cooperative on an equal level if you have a good bond with them. They are trainable, too, IF there is something in it for them, like a treat, as this America's Got Talent act shows.

(47,037 posts)I confess, my dog is smarter than I am and has trained me very well.

(1,766 posts)My cat is quite well-behaved and very loving. In fact, she's hanging out on a pillow next to me, as I type this. That's what she does, for much of her typical day.
And she does it while not stinking up everything, unlike dogs. Or chewing on my furniture. Or being even more clingy, demanding and overall high-maintenance than my ex-husband. And that was very high maintenance. Why he's an ex-husband.

(102,260 posts)derisive missives at other DUers, whether dog-lovers or cat-lovers or both--or their respective choice of pet. I'm sorry you had a bad ex-husband, but this is not the place to vent under the guise of deriding pet owners.
I welcome you to DU, but please treat the DU lounge as a place to enjoy the company of others, not to attack them.

(22,252 posts)If considering a kitten, always get too. They will be so wrapped up in each other they will exhaust themselves.
