3. Regarding the novel's story

( not really any spoilers )

Initially, I had been very off-put at the first book's opening scene, as it was very brutal in its depiction of the opening days of the Chinese revolution (and the sacking of the intellectuals) - I almost stopped reading it. But there had been so many accolades about the book, so I toughed it out, and got hooked. I hope the series handles this scene well.

IMHO the story gains a lot from being a creation from another culture, with its deep history - it was originally written in Chinese and translated into the novels released into the West - this maybe added an alienness, like which was present in the classic novel, Solaris.

Universe then I'm intrigued to borrow the books.
🤔 I might have read a few short stories if his earlier this year. One, however, freaked me out (may somehow connect to my current situation in a symbolic way), and I stopped.

I can't afford another streaming service.

And if you've never read any of The Uplift series -
I highly recommend that you consider taking a look at it.

The drive in it is various aliens finding pre-scentiant species ready to be Uplifted into full conciouness, and space faring abilities that Humanity ends up in.
The Uplifters are the patrons with servant client races for ?10,000 years to be recognized, and released.

Only Humanity has Uplifted dolphins, and chimps all by ourselves; Where Are "our" Patrons?!

It's got well drawn humans (including smart women), fascinating worlds, the dolphins, and chimps, are featured in different books, a whole group of inventive, and formidable (if they're our enemies) aliens of so many different types (including a walking broccoli type being and a friend to humans), a billions of years old Multi Galactic Civilization that has even older races that have retired from space traveling living in Dyson Spheres, with an even greater mystery that hangs over it.

There also is an ecological bent in this civilization, not always kept.

We are still waiting a few of the main characters stories to be mostly wrapped in a promised book from decades back! :grumpy:

Oh! He is the author who"s one short story freaked me out. I read the one short story they printed as an introduction and recognized it.
🤔 I'm going to get it again as a ebook, and try again.
Then I'll see if they have this series.

Since he said he was influenced by AC Clarke, and I noticed in this short story "The Village"' that an alien race mentions Earth humans have no other civilization helping them!

I wonder if Clarke was the first SF author to introduce this concept? Unless, could it be Lensmen? Idk.

Thanks for sharing your comments and opinions, your enthusiasm is infectious

Re Three Body Problem (TBP), my consumption of this trilogy was the Audible books performances, which were very immersive. If the creators for the series pull it off, it might be worth subscribing for just one month, and binging it all at once.

Re David Brin's Uplift series and other works... I'm with you 100% !
I recall buying Uplift Wars in hardback, because I was so impatient for the next installment LOL

I'd first stumbled upon his works reading The Postman, Kiln People, and The Practice Effect.
He's an amazing visionary and creative writer. Even in his hefty novel, Existence was dense with so many future thinking ideas and adoptions (he was even writing about AR - augmented reality - before it was a common buzzword).

If you use Twitter he is active on there, often sharing interesting things, including his own blog pieces.

Until you mentioned the uplift concept, I hadn't connected it to TBP story, but I can't say anything without spoilers :-|

And as far as I can recall, ACC's Childhood's End and 2001, are the first examples of uplifting humans I can think of, but there could have been short stories by others I'm missing.

Cheers

Brin was a serendipitous encounter! My mom happened to pick it up at a, I think, a library book sale! She knew I was a serious SF book & media person. 👍

It was the stand alone first Uplift novel - Sundiver. 🧡
Then later I found 🧡🧡 Startide Rising, and the dive-in to his wild Universe truly began!
I got Heaven's Reach in Hardcover. At that point, I too, couldn't wait for the paperback! 😄

Then you well know that we're still waiting for what happened to (no spoilers for any potential readers) for
___ & ________!

I really think w our CGI abilities now - now IS the time to make "The Uplift War" a movie! Can you imagine the Uplift Ceremony on the big screen.

I read The Postman before the movie. I read that there's a whole section I don't remember from the book that isn't in the movie. 🤔 Must reread. I really like the movie.

Haven't read Kiln People, or The Practice Effect.
Existence, otoh, was amazing! Although when I reread it I now skip all the ways how-we-can-do-outselves-in-for-real chapters. 😦 😓
It made me more depressed.

But the "pods" - wow, what a concept!
However, I want to find out how ____ & ________ became friends! A short story at least.

I drop in into his FB every once in a while. I'll have to go follow him on Twitter, then.

Yeah, I guess you could call Childhood's End an uplift concept, and 2001. I still have to read ?3010.

Thanks for responding.
(one of my longest time friends and SF fan like myself died 12 yes ago. My now fairly long time friend who loves SF - I've been caught up in extra RL problems I haven't read anything in 3-4 months till Luin's short stories.)

Be well & happy watching & reading.
