My Halloween Good Luck Story (long)

I had no Halloween decorations this year because the RG stored them ?somewhere? when he cleaned out the basement. Looked but couldn't find them.

I had nice decs, too, not the cheap stuff from the $ store.

Resigned myself to no Halloween decorating this year. I knew if I bought some, mine would turn up. Also, the ones I have were purchased from craft fairs and the like, and there haven't been any of those here lately.

Today I had a round of errands. On the first, to the recycling center, I dumped out a load of cucumber vines that hadn't survived a cold night. At the spot where I was unloading them was a wood crate. It wasn't the shipping kind, either, it was the kind stocked by Michaels craft store and costs around $10. I put it in the back of my wagon.

As I drove down the street from the center, I saw a pumpkin lying on the side of the road. That's weird, I thought. Kids don't usually toss/smash their pumpkins here until the night of the 31st or after.

It was in front of a forested area. I stopped to see if the pumpkin was smashed on the side I couldn't see. It was a ceramic pumpkin! And a nice one, too. Had some sort of designer label on it. Put this in the crate.

Headed to my next stop: the garden center, where I planned to buy hanging baskets for vining plants I presently have outdoors--philodendron, ferns, etc. After seeing what they had (too pricey for me), I moved on to the 50% off Italian seeds, where I stocked up. At the checkout stand I asked the clerk if they had a wastebasket. I needed to throw out my to do list, since I was nearly done. She gestured around the corner. I was about to toss my list in when a worker put a big shopping bag of mums on the wastebasket. The mums looked good and I couldn't figure out why she was throwing them out. I asked her and she said that when they unload a truck of mums, there are many broken stems. This is what they do with the broken off stems: throw them out. I said I want it; may I have it? She shrugged and said sure. I left the store with a big bag of nice mums with which I can make an arrangement.

I was now starting to get the idea this was my lucky day, so as I approached the library where it's hard to find a parking spot, I fully expected a free spot right in front. Nope. Looks like my luck had run out.

Or had it? I turned to pull onto the next block, where I was hoping to find a spot, but in my rear view mirror I saw one opening up right in front of the library. I turned my car around to go back and get it when I saw someone putting out some hanging planters at the curb. I could not believe my eyes: they were way nicer than the expensive ones at the garden center. The woman put them on the curb, so I asked if she was throwing them out. She said "could you use them?" and I said yes! Into the back of my wagon they went.

And of course the parking spot in front was still open for me when I got to the front of the library.

I arrived home and arranged the mums on the crate with the pumpkin and had Halloween decorations, just in time!
