The coast was so close to England that they were well within range. By Jun 13 the Allies were only a few miles inland and "forward airfields" would still likely be within artillery range. What they were doing those days were using under wing fuel tanks to extend range.

I suspect this is apochryphal.

British breweries donated free beer to soldiers during World War II, but just after D-Day, there was no room made to ship it over the English Channel.

Spitfire mechanics and pilots worked together to modify pylons to carry either specially-modified drop tanks or beer casks to deliver brews to the troops.

Official missions were stopped when the UK Tax Office warned brewers they would get in trouble for exporting beer abroad without paying taxes, but pilots still found ways to get beer where it was needed…

So learned something today which is always good.

they could do the same thing with fuel cans, too. You just have to be careful with how full they are. Full to the brim cans will burst on impact.

It's the "forward airports in Normandy" part I was doubting.

And out of all the websites that talked about the Spitfires carrying beer, only the meme packman posted
had a date on it. Believe whoever made the meme should have done a little fact checking.
