So the huge Powerball payout has been won. I very rarely buy any lottery tickets and did not buy one for this drawing, either.
But sometimes I wonder what I would ever do with so much money. What would you do with a billion dollars in winnings?
I would enjoy traveling. At my age (73) my personal needs are small. I'd move out of my apartment and back into a house, knowing that I could afford the upkeep and to hire people for things I can't do myself. It would be a small, one story house, though, with priorities on space for a library/office and a fully equipped kitchen. Location in a blue region of a blue state, suburban or semi rural, with space to add a dog (probably a border collie, maybe a golden retriever) as companion for my cat and me.
I'd get a new car, but have no need for, or interest in, an expensive one.
The rest of the money would go into donations, trusts, and foundations for favorite causes: legal and counseling aid for victims/survivors of domestic violence; recruiting and promoting diverse liberals for public service as candidates and government appointees; funding for projects developed and operated by and for Native American communities, e.g. education, health care, preservation of language and land.
What would you do if you won a lottery of a billion dollars or more?

(21,447 posts)Taken in a lump sum and after taxes, 1 billion would amount to several million. Still enough to do the things that I would like to do. Same for 2 billion, except that more would be left of the lump sum after taxes.

(13,903 posts)If you are older and I think most people who win go with the cash value. After taxes you are looking at substantially less, not that it would matter much when you talking hundreds of millions.
I would pay off my debts, new car, maybe a new home. Travel a lot.
But the majority of it would go to charities, St Judes', schools I attended, museums, thing I am interested in supporting.
Honestly IMO, that much money becomes a moral burden.
I don't know how the rich navigate their morality with that much money.
We all know the Pig doesn't bother since he is amoral in first place.

(21,447 posts)several million left, as you pointed out. A few more million from a 2 billion (instead of 1 billion) payout.
Still enough to do the things I would like to do.

Buy a house in Long Beach where my niece is going to college
Buy a property here to build my dream house and to establish a dog rescue. Hire my daughter to run the rescue and build a house for her too.
Save lots of dogs. Travel places. Give big money to protect our rights and support liberal media.
That would be cool 😎

(6,823 posts)Got 1 number on my ticket "56" .... Whoever won powerball last night lives like 30 miles from me. So close and yet so far ha. I never play lotto either. Maybe twice in the last 10 years last night being the second.
Anyway ... it was interesting thinking like you the last 24 hours what the hell I would do with the money at my age 64.
What really caught my attention on your post was what I have already, and it made me greatful for what I got. I am about to pay off my house. I have 3 great Jack Russel T. dogs. Live in a very Blue area in Cali. I 'want' a C5 corvette ... (2000 to 2005 year) ... which is still within realm of my finances, but not really necessary (Have a 2003 Ford Explorer and classic F150 1993 flair side truck restoring both paid off) No transportation problems. Still working part time at a cool job 2 days a week and collecting S.S.
Anyway yeah the thought's of winning the lotto and WTH I would do with the money anyway at my age crossed my mind too. I really don't need 'anything' and would probably like you put it to better causes for our country, world.
Bill Gates a 'Self made Billionaire' has said his fortune will go to charity. He earned his money right. Elon Musk ... from what I off the cuff have learned inherited his wealth and has up till now made no such statement or hinted. I and you are in the Gates mind-set. Just some thoughts and thanks for the post. K&R.
PS: Just for fun play the next lotto and I hope You Win !!! ... ha I'll wait for another big one a few years from now all the best and... Peace.
