Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHas anyone put up their decorations for the holidays? I just got back from walking Dolly
and 5 people were putting their lights up. I little early isn't it? Maybe because it is 53 degrees and they think we will have the snow storm to end all snowstorms between now and Christmas. I saw the Charlie Brown lights, the inflatables , one was Santa on a motorcycle. etc. I like the icicle lights. The inflatables, I thought are long pass their prime and they look gross when the air is turned off. How do you decorate the outside of your house or yard????? It's not even Thanksgiving yet

(60,620 posts)When I go into the bedroom it reminds me of those cheesy movies with the lights flashing off and on, off and on.

(21,883 posts)It is outside of my bedroom, they turn the lights out at night. The lights are only on for a few hours at night. They aren't on yet, will probably be on in half an hour or so, and they are off by 11

(4,671 posts)As we've aged, it gets more difficult to do the ladder work, and DH still has to work so we're a bit behind bringing out the decorations and tree out of storage...soon though. Hah - our weekends are Monday and Tuesday. Indoor stuff gets put up by the 2nd weekend of December through 1st week of January; most definitely down again before MLK Day!

(4,671 posts)kept the aluminum tree (remember those) up until July; took it outside, hooked it up with Roman candles and sent it up, up, up - boom! in the middle of the street, so I was told by neighbors. Aluminum confetti - Bikers, geez.

(12,004 posts)because the weather was good. He was outside last night, apparently using the remote to see what kind of display he likes best.
We used to put lights outside on the shrubs, put a lighted Santa sleigh banner above the garage doors, and put up an inflatable Santa with Rudolph in either the front or back yard, depending on my mood. I just cant do it anymore. Now we just decorate inside. And by we, I mostly mean my wife.

(60,620 posts)house and used a different themed tree in each room. As I got older it got harder to decorate all the trees--Arctic tree, Silver and gold tree, 50's tree with bubble lights. Victorian tree and on and on.

(27,640 posts)Some people put theirs out immediately after taking down their Halloween decorations. (In fact, the first to go up were at the house that started decorating for Halloween in late August.)
I think the main reason around here is that, while November is normally cold and rainy, we had a couple of weeks of clear weather to begin the month, so people were putting them out while they had the chance. I know that I put my lights out a couple of days ago, but wont be switching them on until the beginning of Advent at sundown this Saturday.

neighborhood was strange. Half the people have pumpkins out, WELCOME FALL flags and the the other half has their lights on. The Santa on the motorcycle of the neighbor across the street is strange. I have an antique children's sled that I fill up with brown paper. wrapped gifts. That is my outside decoration. One year I bought those lights that had snowflake stencils in them to beam on the house. It didn't impress me that much.

was the Gingerbread plastic house and cookies. I was having a hard time storing all the stuff. Plus I had the tree and decorations from my classroom. One year, I made wreaths for every single window. And hung them from the outside. It was like we were being swallowed alive by Christmas decorations.
-----inflatable. finally said, enough, and took all the trees and boxes of decorations to Goodwill.

(494 posts)It helps us walk down the steep porch stairs. I used to decorate the house, 3 or more trees. It was for our children, now its a 4 ft. tree on a small table. A few wreaths and some favorite decorations. My mil, back in the 1970's got a small artificial tree and just put the stick on bows on the branches it was very cute. We have all of their decorations, glass balls from the 1950', plus all we collected ourselves, boxes of fancy glass ornaments, thinking we would hand down to our kids. They don't want them. They are making their own memories. Our lights will up after Thanksgiving.

(18,829 posts)My parents grew up in New York and after the Macys Thanksgiving parade Macys tore the brown paper down that covered the windows they had been working on for weeks. Everyone looked forward to seeing all the Christmas displays. So, in honor of that, outside Christmas lights must be ready for Thanksgiving night. Im good to go just need one more extension cord.

(33,349 posts)and will turn them on tomorrow night when it gets dark. All clear lights.
The garland and wreath for the front door will go up Friday, along with my inside decorations.

(16,512 posts)That was many years ago, and it was to celebrate with a brother who was home on leave and wouldn't be there in December. Most years, like this one, the tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving. Used to really decorate, and still have most of those decorations packed away. But the years have taken my ability to use a ladder, and trifocals make looking up a nightmare. Friends have gotten over my penchant for sometimes playing Christmas carols in the summer, sure-fire way for me to improve a bad mood. I've loved the lights and colors and music since I was little, and that's not likely to change; yeah, I'm one of those.

(26,017 posts)after Thanksgiving. I start on the weekend. Not a lot of decorations, but I do all but the tree on one day, then take a separate day for the tree. That's because the tree takes me so long. I am fussy about what goes where. Plus, I usually get help from the cat, so I have to keep an eye on her.
Used to have a wide 6.5 foot tree. But I am only 5'1" so it got to be a hassle as I got older. Now I have a 5' tree, which, as Goldilocks would say, is "just right." Tall enough to be a floor tree, small enough to decorate more easily. I only need a ladder for the lighted star on top.

(29,406 posts)..Chicago area today, so I got started with outside lights. Decent temps thru Saturday, so I will do more tomorrow and Saturday.
I put lights on about 25 bushes and trees, so it takes a while.
Every year, I am mystified by the strings of lights that were working just fine when I put them away after Christmas, but fail to light when I take them back out the next year. They are in hard plastic storage boxes in the basement, so no mice, squirrels or raccoons chewing on them, no moisture, no excessive heat - beats me.
A funny aside - a now-former next door neighbor put up assorted inflatables at Halloween and Christmas. One October, I walked out toe front door and thought, "What the hell is THAT? That turned out to be an inflatable crescent moon with a witch sitting in it, but from my side view, all I could see was the edge view of the crescent, which looked for all the world like an erect penis. Rather off-putting.

(6,586 posts)year. It's ridiculous. They have led lights all over their house and change the colors with the holidays. Right now they have a fall theme going on, but they have also added Christmas decorations in the last week or so.
Our decorations go up the day after Thanksgiving and are taken down the day after Christmas. The outdoor ones might stay up a little longer depending on the weather.
