1. For dogs, my vet told me that opposite genders are best with dogs, and that has always worked out

Check with a rescue group that you trust about the personalities of cats they have who are available and how they might mesh with yours.

and I've found that to be mostly true of the cats who have owned me, but I don't know if that's accurate or just catlore.
