I'm covering the Middle Ages in one of my classes.

I got a note from a student telling me she thought the Vikings were made up and weren't real.

Thank goodness she took my class!
Now she knows the truth!!

got it confused with the Norse people. Some people don't listen well enough to comprehend what their teachers are telling them and they only read their textbooks in class. A lot of Americans are just plain hostile to learning about history. Why do we have to learn about something that happened hundreds of years ago, they say. A lot of the problems we face in this country could be mitigated by some curiosity and lessons on how we're facing similar problems that humanity has experienced before. I wish we could get through this period without going through a lot of grief, but I'm not very hopeful. The wheel of fortune continues to turn and it will continue until we awaken as a species.

I tried to watch a series on the Ottoman Empire and they all looked like Vikings. I swear it literally was Viking series that was just repurposed. They were wearing horned helmets and the whole bit. I turned it off.

it's no wonder there are so many people who have erroneous ideas about the past. These are people who believe the Ancient Astronauts show is reality. Shows like that do a disservice to the public. That show in particular is some of the worst on television because it is on the History Channel. They think the History Channel is a good source for education.

make your wish list in advance because somethings are not in the same city. example: cairo is a couple hours from Alexandria. Luxor is pretty far south.

Poverty is way way more pervasive than the appearances show.

one can "virtually walk" around in some middle age/medieval age villages. I use an ipad on my treadmill and walked around one in France yesterday. So frikkin cool. Could be an excellent introduction to village life in those times.
