(104,784 posts)From the looks of it, we're in for quite a winter over here in the Rockies. A hard winter will usually run off a lot of the newcomers so I/m kind of looking forward to it. Maybe I'll break out my skis and go for a few runs out on the trails.

(104,784 posts)-14F, windy and snowing right now, might get up into positive territory for a little while during the day but back to deep freeze tonight. As long as my power doesn't go out again, like yesterday, I'll be fine. We'll have snow off and on but no real accumulation below 6000ft. until Friday-ish. Supposed to be pretty warm after that.

(25,816 posts)the other AM. But the days will start to get longer now, almost imperceptible at first. There's a long North - South
mountain range (Mule Mountains) and in the summer the sun rises way to the northern end, and gradually rises
further and further south. Now it begin it's slow trip back to the north.

.itll be on the ground until April for sure. I would not mind if a whole passel of newcomers decided to vacate.

(104,784 posts)Think about it, there are a whole bunch of good things about a serious winter. If the subzero stuff sticks around long enough, it would take care of a lot of bark beetles too.

(17,772 posts)I love the celebrations of winter solstice so much more than how we celebrate Xmas in the states. Too much materialism for my liking.

(12,564 posts)... or it would if the calendar I designed when I was 12 had been adopted! It bugged me that the year started on an apparently random day 10 days after the solstice, which seemed like such a natural starting point. Also, my calendar had a more "rational" distribution of 7 30-day months and 5 31-day months, although I was kind enough to keep the same names so people wouldn't be confused.

(27,860 posts)The December solstice
Meanwhile, all locations north of the equator have day lengths shorter than 12 hours. For us on the northern part of Earth, the shortest day comes at the solstice. After the December solstice, the days will get longer, and the nights shorter.

(27,894 posts)While the days have shortened in the morning the sunset here IN NYC is earliest at 4:28PM 12/8 for few days then slowly gets later.
It's now at 4:31PM. 👍
