Lessons learned shoveling snow in a blizzard...

Cleared the driveway this morning. By noon it was drifted over. With 40 mph. breezes the plan was a simple forget it. By 3 pm. The wind completely cleared the driveway.

I seem to remember a song by some English band “Let it Be”.

may have been why the wind was able to throw that out of there for you.
Nice work regardless. Great exercise.

It’s like watching the sand dunes. The meadow in back of my house got scoured clean of all the snow that fell yesterday. It all got blown to the east. It’s really kinda mesmerizing.

One of my chores was shoveling the snow, steps, walkways and driveway. Some times it was good to get out on top of the snow especially heavy snow. But it never ceased to amaze me how often the snowplow would come right after I finished the kob and filled in the entrance to the driveway.

5. The winter of 1961-62 is one of the two worst of my life.

If it wasn’t 20-25 below zero, it was snowing — a lot. To make matters worse, my father had broken his hip on Columbus Day. In those days, a broken hip was a six month recovery, so he was rendered hors de combat. My older brother was about 16, but he was in school and also had a part time job, so he was limited in how much he could help with snow duties. I was 7, so I was useless for all practical purposes.

Mom was worried Dad would need to get to the doctor, so she tried to keep the driveway clear. Unfortunately, you backed out of our driveway onto a street which was also US Highway 18. Lots of traffic meant the plows drove by a lot. No sooner was the driveway shoveled, than the plow would go by, and the process would start again. And again. And yet again.

One day, near the end of her strength (not to mention her rope), this scenario played out one more time. It was too much, and Mom sat down in a snow bank and began to sob. The plow driver was going up the other side of the street, saw her and stopped to ask what was wrong (he was also a distant cousin of my father’s). When she explained, he told her to stand aside, plowed the driveway, and told her he would tell the other drivers to keep it clear. Problem solved!

Now how we fixed the issue of Mom putting the car in the garage side ways that winter is another story.

Plow hasn’t been down the street yet even though we’re in beautiful downtown Hale our block is a dead end with about 15 homes.
