(11,367 posts)Which is in Tampa. Tampa is also where Gasparilla is celebrated; Jacksonville has never been associated with Jose Gaspar or Gasparilla Day. I grew up in Tampa, and attended Gasparilla Day parades and festivities in my childhood. At that time, it was also free admittance day for the Florida State Fair, which is held in early February.

(27,715 posts)A big deal. Once a year, local high schools could play a game at the stadium.. was like a lottery system b/c of so many schools n schedules.

(18,629 posts)1) More bowls. There are now 41 bowl games. That means 82 of the 131 Division 1 teams get to go to a bowl game, thus earning a percentage of the gate for their schools. That can add up to a lot of money.
2) Sponsorship. Bowls (and stadiums) now sell off their names to the highest bidder, which can pay a nice piece of change for the privilege of having the Who-Cares Bowl called the "Four Seasons Landscaping Who-Cares Bowl" this year. Of course, they have to cough up every year, or next year it may be the "Joe's Lumber Yard Who-Cares Bowl."
At least colleges haven't gone so far as to name their teams after sponsors (at least, so far as I am aware), but teams do wear patches and symbols that various companies have paid to have displayed on their jerseys.
There are three new bowls this season, Myrtle Beach, Fenway, and LA. Gasparilla has been around since 2008, where have you been? The participating teams can expect a payout of more than a million bucks for the game. That'll buy a lot of Gatorade.
