But the money she earned from Whitney's version was well spent. You can Google it.

However Whitney put her own personal stamp on the song. Her version is known and loved worldwide. Dolly still gets royalties and writing credit for the song. I've never heard that Dolly has a problem with Whitney's version.

For that matter, how many artists do songs written by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, etc.?

She had tried to tell Porter Wagner that she wanted to go solo but he didn't take her seriously. So she decided that the only way to get through to him was through a song.

So, she wrote it especially, as a farewell to him, planning to end their business partnership and mentorship once she had performed it for him.

Porter Wagoner finally took her decision to pursue a solo career seriously after hearing her expressing her desire in the song. They ended their relationship and she went on to multiply her success and fame with seemingly endless possibilities.

I learned this watching a documentary about her which details her history and rise to fame. The story includes the importance of their relationship and especially the importance of the end of their relationship, as a major change, that resulted in the exponential growth of her success.
