year, they puff. Or get rid of their undercoat. And yes, they have that cry. I miss my Roxy, one hell of a Shiba Inu. On second look, it does look like she is in her puff season. Sorry.

Sweet Tansy. I called it "blowing coat" but she did the same thing...twice a year blew out her undercoat and it laid on top of her guard hairs until I brushed it out...every day for a week, and then I didn't really have to brush her again until the next time. Do all Spitz-type dogs do the same? And these guys sounded more like Basenjis than anything else. I've heard those same noises coming from them.

called German Spitz until the WWI, then the name changed. A shiba Inu is a Japanese dog of origin. The Japanese Akita looks exactly like the Shiba Inu but is larger and has more muscle. The American Akita was breed from the Japanese Akita and a Mastiff. It does not look the same. But it does have the distinctive bark, yell, bray of the Inu (Japanese for dog) If you remember, in the Simpson murders, neighbors were allerted that something was going on because of the bray of the Akita. You are right about brushing the dog. We called it puffing. Also, by brushing against the fur, you are actually, pulling their hair. They are clean, like a cat. Roxy did not have to be trained to go to the bathroom outside. She knew because of the cleaniness of the breed. I am sorry that this is so long. and I didn't answer you question about Shiba being a spitz.. Let me check.
Shiba Inu is a spitz.

are spitzes. All of them. Elkhounds, shibas, Akitas, keeshonden, etc. Basenjis are an anomaly. I don't know where they came from but they sound like shibas. There are ancient indigenous murals in southern Africa that show people hunting with dogs that look just like modern basenjis. And you are right about the Akita bray. I lived across the hall from an Akita once and he was mostly very quiet. You never knew he was there. He barked/brayed once and scared me out of my socks!

of naturally. It was only 2 times a year, not constantly. The rest of the year they didn't shed.
