(102,780 posts)I like the cheddar slice along with actual pickles though a good relish will do, mustard and a little ketchup. When I ate hot dogs as a kids, same thing w/o the cheese. I never could deal with cheese and dogs in the same thing.
Otherwise it's the cheese and grilled onions.
debm55
(60,591 posts)gives it that extra kick, though it doesn't have the melting ability of American.
2naSalit
(102,780 posts)Weird relationship with American cheese. And any cheese within a foot of a hot dog is bordering on gastronomic criminality, IMHO.

(96,043 posts)There was a restaurant near my first real apartment, and they did a hamburger with a pocket of blue cheese inside it. The tastes go well together, but as a seasoning, you don't want a lot.
Still, it is high on my list of foods which you just have to wonder who was hungry to try that stuff first....

(130,525 posts)I do not even regard onions as food, since to me they are extremely bitter, more like battery acid or industrial waste. I think it's genetic; my brothers loathe onions too. When we were kids we'd get upset if mom put them in anything and we'd pick out even the tiniest specks.
Chainfire
(17,757 posts)I like onions raw, but sautéed they are an absolute delight. I have never thought of onions as "bitter." I am curious as to how do you feel about garlic?

I get the faintest soap taste but the greenness & tanginess are so prominent that thiink if I'd hadn't read that - I might never have identified that little part as "soapy".

Cooked medium with thousand island, pastrami, Swiss, bacon, avocado, and pickles, maybe a shot of some stout mustard like inglehoffer if I have it on hand. No picnic mustard though.

foods or chose not to. Because of the meds I am on, I don't drink. I only drink when I have a burger or Rueben and it's a beer. I think your idea is very unique and I like it. Do you use the heirloom tomatoes? They are so good. I plan on planting some in the yard this summer. PS. We make lasagna here with eggplant or zucchini instead of the noodles. It's different but great. I feel glad you shared with us Thank you.

I don't drink either and I have non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Unfortunately, I don't have a green thumb so I've never tried to grow my own vegetables, especially tomatoes.
Once Ivy Geranium's reach maturity at my local nursery, I'll splurge and will purchase several hanging baskets. I have no luck keeping Petunia's alive either. Lol.

(19,438 posts)I chop up onions and garlic and load up the ground beef with as much as it'll take and still keep its shape. The onions & garlic cook inside the burger, and it all comes out just right.
I got pretty heavy-duty burger press, and really liked that. But lately, I'll put the ground beef in a sandwich bag and press it down & then flip and press it down on the other side. That allows me to press the onions & garlic in better; then I'll firm up the edges while it's still in the sandwich bag. It comes out big, firm, and well-shaped.

(2,343 posts)No stinky cheeses please, though. Wife would disagree strongly.
A sharp cheddar is nice. Even......gasp.....American for it's superior melting characteristics. I jest. Sort of.
Med rare is what I shoot for....but decent char on the outside (charcoal) and a little bloody is good enough.
How about BUNS?
Browned off with butter makes my day.....however you get there. I prefer a medium sized potato bun.
And the meat......? I'm lucky enough to raise most of what I eat. Anybody have any particular preferences?
