I know I shouldnt have done this, but I am 83 years old and I was in the McDonalds drive-through this morning and the young lady behind me leaned on her horn and started mouthing something because I was taking too long to place my order. So when I got to the first window
I paid for her order along with my own. The cashier must have told her what I'd done because as we moved up she leaned out her window and waved to me and mouthed "Thank you.", obviously embarrassed that I had repaid her rudeness with kindness.
When I got to the second window I showed them both receipts and took her food too. Now she has to go back to the end of the queue and start all over again,
Don't blow your horn at old people, they have been around a long time.

(9,707 posts)I was running late one day and in annoyance, honked at a driver who'd cut in line ahead of me at Starbucks.
He might not have realized he'd done so, since the layout is confusing with a line in the parking lot backed up but sometimes cars slip in another entrance up front.
I tooted politely, just so he'd see we were there and hopefully use the right entrance next time to wait in line.
Apparently the line-cutter had a soul, as when I got up to the window I was told the car ahead of me had paid for my order.

(28,493 posts)I would never pay and then take the order, as shown here. I really am not that kind of person. I was simply amused, and now you are getting me to rethink the whole thing.
I will say that I'm 74 years old, and I'm rarely amused by things I see that are trying to find being old and having memory loss charming. It's not charming. And I'm speaking as someone who is in incredibly good health, has no mobility issues, can still cheerfully climb stairs, and so on. I'll add that when I'm talking to a new acquaintance and decide to reveal my age, they are always open-mouthed in shock, because even though I more or less look my age (gray hair, too many lines on my face) I simply don't behave like a senior citizen.
No, no, no. NOT immature!
Anyway, I honestly appreciate your comment which is getting me to rethink this. I won't remove it, but I hope I'll be more thoughtful about similar things in the future.

(433 posts)But the story must be apocryphal. How could the first person know what the next was going to be ordering and have a valid receipt for it? May as well take it for the laughs instead of at face value.

(28,493 posts)and brought here. I do not think that quickly. Heck, I'm still formulating better replies to something said to me ten years ago.

(11,223 posts)..but very funny. I've paid for others in drive through lines but mostly fellow sports team fans and elderly folks with older cars. People have paid for me and it's a thing in New Smyrna I experience there more than anywhere else. Paying it forward.

(17,615 posts)about once a year I'll treat myself to a large coffee and bagel with cream cheese at the nearby Panera. It's really a treat for me as I'm very, very frugal and it's usually because I've run out of coffee at home and I can't start my day without a cup of coffee. So last time I did that, I pulled around the bend to the drive up window, ordered my large coffee, bagel and cream cheese, pulled up to next in line and it turned out there was a cop car in front of me. As I sat there waiting I thought "I wonder if he's getting donuts" (the old joke about cops and donuts). When my turn came, I drove up and the woman at the window said, "The guy before you paid for your order." I was really surprised and then I said to her, "Well, if I'd have known he was going to do that I'd have ordered something more." She got a chuckle out of that.
I do have to say that his small gesture really made my day.
