As some of you know, we lost two horses last year, and two of our Great Pyrenees.
I posted pics of our new Pyr, Gracie, a few days ago.
This is our new little man, Thunder! We needed to get another pint-sized companion for our other miniature horse. He had been attached like velcro to the mini that died, and was really grieving. He was not very bonded with my big Warmblood riding horse.
I found Thunder at a horse rescue in Tenn. He is 9 months old, and tiny. We are still working on manners--he can still be a little nippy, which should get better once he's gelded. He leads well, and loves cookies. He got his first hoof trimming from the blacksmith yesterday, and was very good.
He looks a lot like my big guy's mini-me. Nobody can stand still long enough for me to get a pic of them together though.

(26,525 posts)I think I should submit it to a horse magazine!
Sadly, Dozer (a Fjord) is pretty much out of the business of carrying a rider any more. Arthritis
He's 27, and we rode him till last year. He's a pasture ornament and company to Thunder now. 💗💗💗
They keep me sane.
Bayard
(29,703 posts)And a couple of good-looking guys! I've read that Fjords are very sturdy mounts with even dispositions.
Animals are the best of what's left in the world. I couldn't live without them.

(26,525 posts)I feel exactly the same!
Dozer has been a big part of our lives since we got him 20 years ago! Fun, with a funny sassy personality. Our daughter never took much to riding, so my husband inherited him when she went off to college - despite not having a real interest in riding! They have been quite a twosome. I switched to trail riding from eventing (I had a backyard Hungarian horse from Montana at that time. Loved him so. A bay. Is Paco bay?)
Husband has been trail riding with me and two girlfriends the last several years. There used to be a neighborhood Saddle Club that rode trails, but most have now aged out and no youngsters are coming up to follow? I think the rural lifestyle has really lost participants and access. We arent fancy and wealthy, but it does take resources - commitment. We call ourselves The Remnants. 😄
It may be that husband will join us on his mountain bike now. I'm wondering if, at 66, I have another horse in me? Or is Thunder my last equine pal into the mists of time?
I'm grateful I managed to have a life with horses, anyway. I'm sure you feel the same!

(29,703 posts)Paco is a black roan.
I don't know if Pony Club or 4-H is as popular with kids anymore. That would be a shame. You're never too old to ride either! Look at Queen Elizabeth. You and I are about the same age. I have plenty of aches and pains and asthma, but I will keep riding till I can't climb on a horse anymore. I'm figuring about 105!
We certainly aren't fancy or wealthy either. We have our little log cabin in the woods on 12 acres. We do nearly all the work ourselves (we're just slower at it!)

(29,703 posts)Are you into endurance riding?
cilla4progress
(26,525 posts)This was a trailhead camp trip last summer. I thought it was funny because I was multi-tasking on him! Had just crossed a mountain highway with dog on long leash and was fishing out my phone to try and find my husband who was on his mountain bike somewhere with us! His old guy, Dozer (27) can't go with us any more. 😥
We ride in treeless saddles, is why it looks like endurance?

*I used to event, many moons and horses ago!
Bayard
(29,703 posts)I am envious. We have 200 acres next to us, with great trails, that was sold last year. Now we tiptoe past the, No Trespassing, signs.
I don't know anything about treeless saddles. I was looking at your saddlebags. Looks like fun! I started out wanting to do eventing many years ago as well, but was spending too much time in the emergency room, so went to straight dressage.
This is my big man (17hh), Paco.

(26,525 posts)What breed? Do you show?
Nice walk! 😀😉🥂
Bayard
(29,703 posts)I haven't shown in many years, but I'm hoping to get back into it. We have a ways to go. I've had him less than 2 years, after not riding for many years.
