Life imitates art - Mars Wrigley fined after workers fall into vat of chocolate

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Federal workplace safety authorities have fined a central Pennsylvania confectionary factory more than $14,500 following an accident last year in which two workers fell into a vat of chocolate.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Mars Wrigley in the June accident at the Elizabethtown M&M/Mars factory, saying the workers were not authorized to work in the tanks and weren't trained on the proper safety procedures for the equipment.

Officials said two workers employed by an outside contracting firm fell into the partially filled chocolate tank while doing maintenance work. Emergency responders were able to free the pair by cutting a hole in the bottom of the tank, officials said. Both were taken to hospitals, one by helicopter.

A company representative told reporters last week that the safety of workers and outside contractors “is a top priority for our business.”

trained how NOT to fall into a vat of chocolate," rather than admit to fooling around like a pair of idiots.

It's unfortunate that too many people can't admit fault and have to blame others.

I am surprised you would liken that to the skill and training required to fly a plane. Safety is the number one priority for a pilot. It obviously wasn't for those fools at the chocolate factory.

Does this mean you know there are only simple dangers involved? Ample safety measures are in place? Anyone competent to wash dishes could do the job?

Tweedledum and Tweedledee should have sought help, but they didn't. It is obvious they were acting like a pair of bozos. Yes, anyone competent who isn't stupid can wash dishes.

In the old days, it would be the idiots that fell in who would be sued. They didn't take safety seriously, caused a shutdown in production, caused the waste of a vat of chocolate, and damage to the vat that had to be cut be rescue workers, then blamed the company because they weren't smart enough not to fall. It's like that movie Idiocracy, where it's quite normal to be stupid.

Contracting can be sketchy as hell with plenty of corners cut and blatant lies told to everyone involved. Any complaints and you're fired without notice and they bring in someone else.
