The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsToday I am 1 year old
It has been exactly 1 year since my Bone Marrow Transplant. All I can say is wow. I did it. I have more good days than bad days. It takes me longer to do most things.
But the good thing is, I am still in remission.
This Thursday, I get more vaccines. Then in a year, I get my MM&R vaccine.
I thank you all who have been on this journey with me and showed support.

(16,409 posts)I celebrated by cleaning out and organizing a few cabinets in the kitchen. It's been over 2 years since that has been done. Next week, I'll do a few more. Slow and steady.

(16,409 posts)I can have company over for dinner again, weekend guests, go places other than the DR. I even got permission to drink again.
The Doc told me to drink tonic to help ease my muscle spasms. I told her tonic was useless without gin.

(16,409 posts)Yup. I spent last Valentin's day at Johns Hopkins getting a transplant. It took 4 hrs and perfectly painless.

(16,409 posts)I'm glad I chose them. Well, I basically chose the Dr. and that is where she practices. She specializes and studies my type of cancer.

(19,741 posts)My mom and dad lived in Florida and had to arrive at the hospital about 10 days before I did. My husband and I flew in from Az and only had to stay a week. Mom and dad then rented an apartment there for about 3 months for frequent checkups. All went well and she had an extra 10 years.
There were several things at play in my decision. Where I live the nearest place to get a BMT is a 2 hour drive. With Covid in play, no place would allow visitors. I knew I had to be isolated, But my spouse not so much. He has family there and I figured they could give him the support he needed.
We split our time between them, the Marriot and the JH Family pavilion.

(16,409 posts)because when you get a transplant, they wipe out your entire immune system and the chemo they give you to do that definitely makes you lose your hair, like a newborn baby.

(16,409 posts)experiencing a health crisis is to follow Drs orders. If my oncologist told me to run naked around my house every day, I would have.

My Birthday is on the 9th. He gets me a dozen roses. They always last until Valentine's Day. Now throw in the 2nd birthday on the same day. He gets 3 birds with 1 stone.
