(39,508 posts)Tim Blake Nelson was in the film. Hiaasen wrote the novel.

(23,586 posts)I love his books and have read most of them. I am not going to tell the title because I cheated though.
The book this is based on is one of his YA books; I've read it and really liked it. It's typical Hiaasen with an assortment of bizarre characters, and the equally bizarre setting of Florida.
Those familiar with Hiaasen's books will recall a certain former governor of Florida who turns up frequently. I can't remember if he is in this book, but if he is and he isn't in the film I do not think I want to watch it. He is one of the most colorful and interesting characters I have ever encountered.
I do know he is in at least one of the YA books.
Brother Buzz
(39,508 posts)We purchased the book for our son, and I enjoyed it immensely. Tim Blake Nelson's performance was totally memorable, and he kinda, sorta transitioned from a bumbling bad guy to a good guy; the bachelor and the model rode happily into the sunset.
yellowdogintexas
(23,586 posts)Skink is in at least one of the YA books.
Now I will have to find the movie!!!
I have only seen one movie based on a Hiaasen book:
Strip Tease. It doesn't veer too far from the story, and thank goodness the antics of the ex-husband are in the movie and absolutely hilarious. The splinting of his broken arm just has to be seen - there is no describing it.
Brother Buzz
(39,508 posts)I'll have to chase down Strip Tease. I had no clue any of Hiaasen's books had been made into films.
If you like Hiaasen, you might like Tim Dorsey. Set in Florida, and his main character is a hoot, albeit a selective serial killer. It's an upside world when you can root for a serial killer.
yellowdogintexas
(23,586 posts)Sounds like his character is maybe related to Dexter.....
Brother Buzz
(39,508 posts)There are no spoilers in this wiki entry, but perhaps knowing a bit about Serge A. Storms will help you understand what motivates him in Dorsey's crazy novels.

(39,508 posts)Too easy, I guess, I should have gone with Passepartout

Harker
(17,277 posts)Brother Buzz
(39,508 posts)In the film, Passepartout was played by the huge Mexican comedic actor and pioneering movie star, Cantinflas (think Charlie Chaplin). Apparently, while being the glue that held the movie together, he also made a boatload of money
While David Niven was billed as the lead in English-speaking nations, Cantinflas was billed as the lead elsewhere. As a result of the film, Cantinflas became the world's highest-paid actor.
Harker
(17,277 posts)I'm sure I saw it in early childhood.
Coincidentally, I saw it on the shelf at my local library and thought about borrowing it.
I think I'll do that.
I was interested to see that 'passepartout' can refer to a 'masted key' or to a photo taped between glass and cardboard.
Brother Buzz
(39,508 posts)I vividly remember the scene of the balloon passing the Alps, and Passepartout scooping an armload of snow from the peak to cool their celebratory champagne.

(31,565 posts)but I sort of cheated... when I answered the question about Martin Weir, that made me realize I hadn't watched that movie in a long while, so I watched it last night and... of course, the incomparable Rene Russo was Karen Flores... I sort of knew it but sort of didn't.
