In honor of Presidents’ Day and its mattress sales, here is a photograph of President Truman’s White House mattress in 1952:

The holiday's real name is "Washington's Birthday."

An early draft of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act would have renamed the holiday "Presidents' Day" to honor the birthdays of both Washington and Lincoln, which would explain why the chosen date falls between the two, but this proposal failed in committee, and the bill was voted on and signed into law on June 28, 1968, keeping the name "Washington's Birthday".

According to Jackie Kennedy, prior to her renovation of the interior, the White House was kind of drab and shabby-looking, with cheap motel-style furniture everywhere, and no sense of the deep history of the building and its importance to the United States.

Part of her plan to jazz up the interior was to locate and obtain historic pieces of furniture previously owned by important political figures or having served in prominent houses or government buildings.
