I sit here with two space heaters running and indoor temps no higher than 57F and outdoor temps
at minus 11F since midnight and extending well through the morning.
So, the female weather announcer on MSNBC is wearing a very pretty, but clearly summer floral sleeveless frock as I grab yet another fleece to layer on. What is that all about? It feels like she is trolling the audience. Am I in an SNL skit?

(102,791 posts)It is a good question but it gets hot on set so I can see why someone would not wear warmer clothes. Maybe they change before they leave the building?
That's all I can come up with.

(18,579 posts)You look women are wearing sleeveless dresses and the front cut so low you sit there and wonder, well, you get the drift.
How bad is it where you are? Here in Southeast Ohio it is to reach 70. I wake up and wonder if I moved south. We had one ice storm at Christmas.

(113,965 posts)but, Mika, Joe, and the entire crew were managing to wear winter-appropriate clothing, so why just the WEATHER reporter--of all persons--wearing summer clothing as she reports the intense coldwave moving east nationwide?

(113,965 posts)Knowing her reporting is going out to people across the country facing many feet of snow, heavy driving winds, and subzero temps, don't you think she would get a "clue" that that might be a bit insensitive?

Most of TV news is meant as entertainment not really information. Its why they almost always give a headline without deeper context.

Is it mandatory for women wear those things. On GMA/Today, or any cable news show, they all wear them. More than a few times in my life I have rolled an ankle wearing work boots or sneakers, and it swells and hurts. Heels would only seem to exacerbate the roll problem.

(8,833 posts)seem to dress a tad inappropriately to my mind. Not only sleeveless, plunging necklines, but the dresses seem tighter than tight. Once I thought I saw our weather critters belly button outline. I also noticed that the male weather critter always wears a suit and tie. I fear one day that the male weather person will be wearing a tank top and a speedo. 🥶😱

There was an uproar about women legislators having bare arms in the Missouri Legislature last month.
BY GIULIA CARBONARO ON 1/13/23 AT 4:37 AM EST
Missouri House Republicans' decision on Wednesday to tighten the dress code for women legislators has sparked criticism and outrage on social media, with many questioning why no similar rules were imposed on men. The new measure, prohibiting women legislators from having bare arms while in the chamber and initially calling for blazers to be mandatory, was spurred by Missouri's Republican Representative Ann Kelley during the House's opening session.
The proposed changes reportedly originated in last year's session, when several lawmakers complained that some of their female colleagues weren't dressed at the required standard. The update was immediately bashed by Missouri House Democrats, who questioned whether changes to the chamber's dress code were really that high on the list of priorities. But despite the criticism, the measure was eventually passed with some changes, allowing women legislators to wear cardigans as well as jackets in the chamber, but still preventing them from showing their bare arms to "maintain a formal and professional atmosphere."
The dress code for women lawmakers now states that "proper attire for women shall be business attire, including jackets worn with dresses, skirts, or slacks, and dress shoes or boots."
News of the decision in the Republican-controlled Missouri House of Representatives sparked significant backlash online, with many questioning the need to control how women dress in the chamber.
"Wait. How come only MEN are allowed to bare arms? I have so many questions...," author David Brin wrote on Twitter.

(113,965 posts)I'm not trying to demand a dress code, but seasonal-appropriate dress when you are speaking of weather to a nation largely experiencing major winter storms just seems a reasonable thing to expect.
I just don't get it. If they were stationed in Miami and broadcasting locally, it would make sense, But out of Rockefeller Center, NYC in the middle of winter to a national audience?
Oh, well, we might even get above zero F. today, so maybe I'll break out the spring frocks. LOL
Karma13612
(4,981 posts)But, in the southern states, which would be included in national broadcasts, you would be welcomed wearing summer frocks because its in the 70s here. Its going to be close to 80 tomorrow here in NC. So, seeing someone in a summer dress would be fine!
I know that those in the upper states are freezing and it feels frustrating. I sympathize completely! I lived in Northern New York for most of my life and faced miserable winters.
The problem with national weather broadcasting is that you wont be able to match your clothes to everyones current dress expectations.
hlthe2b
(113,965 posts)not to dress accordingly. But the insensitivity of a weather reporter doing so--beyond the incongruous nature of it when she is showing video clips of record blizzards, subzero temps and road-closing ice storms with power outages is a little much. There is a big difference. No one is telling Miamians or anyone else how to dress in their locale. Can you not see that? All the rest of the Morning Joe crew were dressed in winter dress--from multiple studios. But the weather lady reporter can't?
Karma13612
(4,981 posts)They are broadcasting from.
Where are the MSNBC studios where she is locally? She can be doing forecasts for the whole country but, if she is local to DC, then she is probably wearing clothes for DC?
Just guessing.
Today in North Carolina, its in the 70s so I would be surprised if someone was wearing a sweater and corduroy slacks. Its all in perception.
And I agree, maybe the studio is hot so they dress for their comfort.
I understand the frustration of seeing people dressed for summer while you are freezing in areas of freezing cold and snow. Its incongruous to be sure. But thats the thing about regional and national reporting.

(130,533 posts)it's probably because female tv personalities are expected to show as much flesh as possible, even weather reporters. Men get to wear suits and ties and look professional, but women are supposed to look attractive and dress as if they just left a cocktail party.
Don't get me started.
