(337 posts)We live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, and spend a few months in the winter at our condo in Fort Myers. But if it weren't for my wife I would not spend another second in Florida. I would stay in N.C. year round

(43,850 posts)I lived there for a lot of years and Mr Bear was born and raised in Winston. Those are wonderful beaches. I love Emerald Isle and Hatteras in particular but you cant go wrong really.
The PNW beaches are wonderful too but in a whole different way!

(33,344 posts)that I rented last October. EI is my favorite NC beach.

I'm definitely a beach person, although I don't sit on the beach or swim in the ocean here. The ocean is just constantly changing color and mood, which appeals to me as a photographer. I love walking on the beach at sunrise and sunset. The rest of the day I read in the breezy shade on the deck, enjoying the sight, sound and smell of the ocean.
It only takes 3 hours to drive here from my home and I try to spend a week here in the fall every year.

(9,148 posts)I love love love the ocean. I like living in Oregon because, not only can I get to the ocean quickly, I can live a couple hundred feet above sea level and see mountains not too far away, but not have to go up into them if I don't want to, like when it's snowing. I've spent a lot of time in Colorado, including one entire summer. Everyone assured me that I'd fall in love with the state and want to move there. NOPE!!! Mountain life and weather are way too harsh for me, and I hate the dryness and always feeling dehydrated. And, a 75-degree April day that turns into 30 degrees and snow the next day?! NO thanks! Also, I can't stand being landlocked, psychologically. I need to know I can get to the ocean within a couple-hour drive. After that one summer, we left Colorado in early September. It SNOWED the next day. I could not have been happier to high-tail it back to the coast.

(17,376 posts)in 1979, made it happen in 88 and been here ever since. Helped that my wife set down a taproot within a a couple of months of us being here. Were 5 minutes from a wide open beach with few to no people for miles in both directions. Im the mountain one (shes the ocean) so weve had a lot of mountain vacations over the years. But the oceans been amazing and I wouldnt change a thing if we had it to do all over again. Weve been blessed.

(9,148 posts)I've lived in the midwest, on the east coast, and in the Bay Area of California, but I'm really glad we chose Oregon to settle in a couple decades ago. It was a great place to raise kids, too.

(141,926 posts)visited my folks in Vermont where they were with friends and family, and then we drove to Jersey shore! (Near where my daughter now lives.)
Our trip south provided a bit of an adventure, when big truck/van hauling bees had an accident, so bees disrupted the route for many hours. We were lucky enough to pull over for 'dinner' stop on the way (AND m/hotel in NJ agreed to hold our room, as we were very late arriving.)
Our m/hotel had a pool and within walk to beach/ocean, so a memorable vacation!

(60,568 posts)Around Boston the water is cold. Even sitting on the beach, gave me salt on my lips and a terrible taste. I did like the beach in the Bahamas though. Warm water. Sounds like you had a very good time. I know bees are good for the enviornment, but I would rather avoid them and let them do their thing.

(17,757 posts)so it detracts from what was the original draw. Growing up in the 50s and 60s, the Gulf Beaches in Florida were havens, dotted with what was called "Wayside Parks" (State park system) where families could make use of shelter and picnic tables and would usually have a BBQ available. Those were the good days.
One of the most beautiful beaches that I have ever seen is on St. George Island, near Apalachicola. When my wife and I were newly wed, you could go there on a holiday weekend, and have a half mile of beach to yourself. Now it is condos and weekend whiskey warriors, with a park set aside at one end.
I have chosen to live in a wood in the rural part of Florida where my neighbors have either four legs or wings and I wouldn't trade it for a mountain paradise or condo overlooking the water. The weather is great about 8 months out of the year, and hotter than the hinges on the gates of Hell the other four; you learn to live with it. We had cold weather, with hard frost, for about a week. Two weeks ago, the grass began greening up, flowers are flowering and life is returning to the deciduous trees.
Everyone has their own version of paradise.

(100,133 posts)At least not in California. Beaches are eroding badly, and canyons are notorious for the way wildfires will flame up them like a chimney.
Its like the vacations I took to Florida, when a dear friend had a condo practically on the beach. Lying out on the balcony watching and listening to the waves was heavenly, absolutely heavenly. But live there? Even discounting the politics, which I never do, the answer was and is No.

there. Anyway, the few times I was able to return I was in love all over again. Id even put up with the humidity and intense sun to sit and watch the clouds float by over the mountain ranges, and gaze on the spectacular turquoise water and white sand at the beaches.
