you go and why? Is it because of the food? the land? the customs, the art, the architecture> I would go to Italy. For the art, food, and architecture. Close second would be Japan. Chose wisely my friends --you only can pick one country. Have fun and enjoy yourself, whille you are there.

France is good too, because I 'kind of' speak the language!

(6,672 posts)As much as I like the UK, I've been there, so I'd pick someplace else. I'd probably go for Italy too: the ancient history and ruins, the art and architecture, certainly the food and wine. And the Mediterranean and Adriatic are gorgeous.

(130,516 posts)Ancestors from there, speak the language enough to get by, some shirttail relatives still there, some of the world's most spectacular scenery, a civilized government, northern lights, reindeer.

(9,390 posts)The Hellenic Republic, Greece. Hits all the questions on your list. The Land, the islands, the coast. The History, the customs the architecture. The food, hell yes, the ancient architecture, amazing. I will give you that the food and history of Italy edge Greece, but the people of Greece, much nicer.

(6,551 posts)I would love to go back. It was beautiful, it was friendly, I enjoyed every minute. Well, I did have a little trouble with starting to think about dinner at 9:00 pm. But than every meal was exquisite so I sort of forgot about the hour. And the Spanish wines were to die for. Yeah, I'd go back without a hesitation.

(35,176 posts)as there is no place I have ever been where the diving was so incredible. The entire groups of islands around it are amazing. I have never wanted to stay somewhere else as much as I have there and it pains me to know I will never be able to go back and that my scuba days are long over.
Still, the island itself had so many different places on it as small as it is and the people there were kind and helpful and just the best of all the places I had been diving.
If I could die at 70 feet under watching big groupers or 30 feet with all the colors still there and watching feeding stations and little Blennies I would die happy.
EDIT to correct 50 feet to 30 feet, still not enough color at 50.

(35,176 posts)for some reason or another. I think a few in our little diving group of 8 wanted to shop. I found it crowded, like every tourist place I have ever been but I did manage to find my way to see Camille Pisarro's studio and walk around in it for a while. THAT was thrilling to me. I have no experience outside of that area so I cannot say anything else about it.
I am certain there are some lovely places in both the A.V.I. and the other islands in the B.V.I. but that was my experience. The places I loved are gone after the hurricane and another hurricane wiped out my second choice of Guanaja, Honduras so I stick with Tortola. There was little there to not like.
Do you have experiences there? I would love to hear about them.

(35,176 posts)I had had pneumonia and left the hospital early to go on the one dive trip we did there and I had to stay on the boat and not dive. i heard it was really nice. I did hop in when some dolphins came by. No close encounter but it was cool to be semi close to them.
