It looks fancy and special.

Horizontal is boring looking, utilitarian and doesn't taste as good as diagonal.

of course, and she preferred to cut them from side to side. I thought that was just how life (and sandwiches) worked. Then I went to school and saw other kids eating sandwiches that were cut diagonally, and I wondered "What kind of sorcery is this? Where do those other moms get that special bread?" I soon figured out the discrepancy, and the next time she made me a sandwich, I pointed out to my Mom that she was 'doing it wrong.' I still cut diagonally to this day, while Mom still cuts across.

Grilled cheese? Double diagonal…more “points” to dip into the tomato soup. Peanut Butter & Fruit…open face no slice. Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato…maybe no slice, maybe diagonal depends on the thickness of the tomato slice.

Favorite BLT…no bread…deconstructed on plate. Half head grilled Romaine lettuce with Bacon, onion, tomato piled on top dressed with Poppy seed dressing.

She did this as a child and still does it.

Takes all the food apart on her plate. Puts the food into neat little stacks.
Some of the little stacks she refuses to eat.

OK I know I am a picky eater but my daughter is worse than I am.

Cook bacon on a half sheet, pour off most of the bacon love*, split a head of romaine lettuce in half, nestle the halves in the remaining bacon love and grill till a slight char is on the lettuce.

Chop up the bacon, onion, tomato. Plate lettuce cut side up and apply bacon and veggies on top of the sliced lettuce (like you would put stuff on a pizza) then dress with poppyseed dressing.

*I hate calling it grease or fat.

I remember clearly as I loved the new diagonal cut sandwiches.
Far superior in looks and taste than the bad horizontal cut.

I was in third grade, my teacher was a nun named Sister Rosalie.
She was very child focused, we loved her.

Also was able to break from mom's preferred brands of things like mayo, ketchup, and whatnot. It's amazing how those habits can be difficult to break.
