(29,732 posts)#3 is Looking Glass. Song came out the year I graduated high school, so the name of the band got repeated often enough in those early years that I could never forget their name.
#5, I believe, is pioneering DJ Alan Freed.

(33,063 posts)For # 5 you're right...Freed was part of the first group inducted in 1986, along with Sam Phillips, also a "non-performer"
(I'll have to edit the OP because I read that someone else was the only non-performer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)

(3,255 posts)Ahmet Ertegun (sp?), co-founder and longtime head of Atlantic Records? If not in the Hall, he darn well should be. Signed a LOT of great talent that others took a pass on.

(33,063 posts)(From Wikipedia)
"In 1987, (Ahmet) Ertegun was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, of which he himself was a founder"
(If you haven't seen the movie "Cadillac Records" you should...The guy playing Ertegun is great, and so are all the other actors, including Beyonce Knowles as Etta James)

(3,255 posts)In the R&R HOF? (Besides the 3 already named)
I suggest that George Martin should be, if hes not. Although Im not a huge Beatles fan, his work producing their albums was innovative and terrific.
Cadillac Records is indeed a good movie!

(43,273 posts)I 'll guess Dick Clark.

(33,063 posts)Well done!
Dick Clark was inducted, but there's at least one more non-performer who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

(33,063 posts)a long time ago,
Was it Neal Cassady?
Brother Buzz
(39,900 posts)I was gobsmacked when I learned that, and I can't remember what was first; Bob Weir traveling with the Merry Pranksters or Neal Cassady becoming his roommate.
Bob Weir was always an enigma to me, not unlike Neal Cassady. And I need to underscore the word was; a boatload of the stuff that mystified me was clarified in the film: The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir (2015).

(39,900 posts)They expect it of me.
They give me whatever I want.
So I do it.
So...four years later....he was dead.
Neal Cassady is still an enigma in my mind. I wish I could write a fairy book ending to his life, but that was not to be.

(39,900 posts)And he never just sat; he was always moving. Always.
Again, he's an enigma in my mind, but I've come to realize he was horribly insecure, and he truly feared his secret would be discovered.

said of Neal Cassady (who did most of the driving on that trip)
"He never slept, he never ate, and he never stopped talking!"

(33,063 posts)And he likely died from an overdose of some type of "downer"...not from booze, and not from "the elements".
No autopsy was done because he died in Mexico and wasn't a Mexican citizen.
Brother Buzz
(39,900 posts)I found it curious, he never visited Druid Heights, a magical place all his friends frequented. I wonder if it was a self-imposed absence.
Factoid: The Hot Tub was invented there by and old friend and mentor of mine, Ed Stiles
ProfessorGAC
(76,706 posts)He just has to have been inducted. Also, Phil Spector? Mutt Lange? John Hammond?

(3,255 posts)in addition to the others already named above. Davis was head of Columbia records for several years, then Arista records, then the RCA Music group signed many artists who became well known acts including Janis Joplin, Sly & the Family Stone, Santana, Chicago, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Blood Sweat & Tears, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd and may others. Pretty solid list there, eh?

(33,063 posts)What was the original name of the band?
("The Golliwogs" came later)
Brother Buzz
(39,900 posts)Fortunate Son: My Life, My Music, so I know (actually knew it before I read the book) but I won't be a spoiler, except to say it was a reasonably successful local band.
Fantasy Records didn't like the name and came up with Golliwogs, and pushed it on them. John, alone, came up with the name, Creedence Clearwater Revival; it was an easy sell to the band.
