The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWe're way overdue for a dog picture thread. Let's see your special canine companion!
For the first time in my life, I live in a house with a watchdog. This is Fang:

He's a longhair Chihuahua, a breed of dog I never thought I could get attached to. I've never known a more laid-back dog than Fang. He's not high strung at all. Just quiet and affectionate. He barks so rarely, I hardly know what it sounds like.

(56,829 posts)I am like you - never thought I could deal with a little yappy ankle-biter, but my son brought Frida home a year or so ago and I am totally smitten. She isn't yappy or obnoxious at all - damn smart, tough, and more stamina than the work dogs!
Frida, aka Tinky

the illegal alien, Lupe (brought her up from Chihuahua sin papeles)

and the mutant, Dumbass

av8rdave
(10,656 posts)Dumbass looks like such a great dog (and how can you not love that name?)!
Kali
(56,829 posts)his feet are as big as dinner plates and the front is splayfooted - his tongue hangs out about a foot when he gets hot. His tail is a scritchy skinny stick that doesn't go with his huge body. He is a freaking mutant.

(6,488 posts)I've always had a suspicion that dogs know what we're talking about. I hope it doesn't hurt his feelings that you called him Dumbass. I think he's quite handsome.

I can assure you while the other animals around here know what we are talking about a lot of the time, Dumbass does not. He really is his name. He is a good dog and even useful sometimes because he does whatever the other dogs are doing. He is scary looking and has a deep bass, earth-shaking woof which is intimidating to potential intruders, but the reality is he is as dumb as a post.

(14,180 posts)What a great-looking dog, splayed feet and all.
He's making me smile.
Kali
(56,829 posts)unlike me, he looks way better in pictures than in person. But yeah he makes us smile (and LOL) a lot.

(33,688 posts)if he could talk he would sound like Lennie from Of Mice and Men:
"Oh, hello George, where have you been? Are we going to go out and play now George? We are best friends, aren't we George?"

(9,214 posts)I mean if he wandered away from you and you called "Hey Dumbass come here" you would probably get half the town to come. Well at least look at you.

(43,850 posts)Merrily's not half Tucker's size (he is one MOOSE of a Cavalier) but she will take a poodle OUT. And then smooth back her hair and be Miss Thang. Tucker's more the Dumbass type, though he's cute as hell. Dumb and passive aggressive, bless his heart. But he and my husband love one another like a pig loves mud. Right now the Boss is away and he's going through his typical Camille act. Something ALWAYS has an owie or he's got an upset stomach or he's just depressed.

(20,384 posts)He just looks sad because ha had not had anything to eat in the previous five minutes. I swear the dog would eat non stop if we let him. Unlike Fang, this one barks at everything. He watches TV so he can bark at animals when they come on.

(10,656 posts)I'm guessing he's pretty affectionate.

(4,187 posts)I won the dog lottery when I rescued this dog.
I was going to find her a home, but it took me a year to get her well...
and by then we were attached at the hip <3
Smart and sweet.....so very sweet. loves everybody.
doesn't bark much unless there's something I need to know.
strong as an ox. she's only 50 lbs, but could pull me down the street if I let her.
She has pulled me down before.
Her tail is always wagging...and it's long....it bumps into things.
I took her to the pet store and I was afraid her tail was going to knock everything off the shelves.
She's so unaware of where that thing goes.

MrsBrady
(4,187 posts)must have been funny to watch that tail fly. good looking breed.
Rosie's some mutt mix. German Shepherd and some type of hound or pointer is my guess.
When she does bark she sounds like she's found something and it rattles the windows.

(13,661 posts)was a Chihuahua / Jack Russell mix but I'm skeptical because he was just a mellow, tuned-in little guy. Named Doobie. Mostly black with a white star on his chest; he just had the neatest personality. The couple split up and neither one could take Doobie with them so I placed him through someone here on DU. (We had 7 cats at the time and traveled a lot; cats are easy to leave at home for 3-4 days with no supervision but you canNOT do that with a dog!).
Fang looks like a sweetheart (ahem, killer).
av8rdave
(10,656 posts)I only thought I knew what they are like.
They're pretty smart dogs. His vocabulary of words he understands is rather extensive. One that gets him excited is "ice cream," so we took to spelling it around him. He now knows what "i c e c r e a m" means as well. That and "h u n g r y."
I find myself missing him when I'm gone on trips.

Angry cocker: For the 12 Mittens duration, I am submitting this angry cocker spaniel for use as the representative of all dogs. This pic was in the local paper's Sunday available-for-adoption a few years ago. He was taken by the time I called. He is thoroughly pissed, not, I hope, the reason he ended up in the shelter, but rather for being subjected to the indignity of doggie jail.

O.K., *this* is the one, but they were puppies back then:

(24,853 posts)I too have a chihuahua but mine is from a rescue kennel. She's as laid back and quiet as the golden retriever we got her for. That is to say our golden retriever needed a pet so we got her the chihuahua LOL.
She has a little ball we play fetch with and sometimes the retriever gets it and tries to hide in her mouth. My little Luna sticks her head right into Bella's mouth while going after the ball.
Very nice dog you have there. I always used to tell my wife "I hate small dogs" but now I know the day Luna leaves my life I'm going to be a wreck for a very long time.

(3,736 posts)his name was Don Monolito Montoya II (remember the TV show High Chaparral?). He was gorgeous as your little guy and was extremely laid-back, rarely barked and very loving. I've had two short-coats as well and neither of them were high strung as they are portrayed to be. And all fierce guard dogs....
May Fang have a wonderful, long life...
av8rdave
(10,656 posts)He is a wonderful companion. My brother's MIL had a Chihuahua many years ago. A very ill tempered, nervous dog. I realize now that was probably more a reflection of the owner and environment than the breed. That dog created an impression in me that lasted many years. Judging too quickly or on a single example is always a mistake.

(11,065 posts)Here he is at 6 months of age with Mr. Lobster that I made to cover one of his wiggly giggly balls. He's giving me the fish eye because he was thinking I was going to take Mr. Lobster away for more surgery again (here I had just finished remaking the tail and finally able to give it back to him though two days later I had to remake the whole thing. Oh, and that little bald spot on his arm is because he had recently had his neutering surgery, and that's where the IV line went in (that's how I'm sure he's 6 months old here).

Here he is doing the daily toy inventory (which he sometimes does more than once a day). Every day at some point he goes around the house and collects all his toys in a pile and just lays there with them rearranging the the toys in some mysterious way that makes some kind of sense to him. Excuse the mess... I was refinishing furniture at the time.

Ooops, wrong end. In any case in this one he's beating up on Mr. Lobster again after which he buried him under his binkie and sat on him (he does that with all his toys for some reason). And yep, poor Mr. Lobster had to go back into emergency surgery again (good thing I still have about two yards of that red material left!).

This is Yoshi's nose. This is what most of the pictures I try to take of him end up coming out as though usually it's not completely mashed on the camera lens so you can see he has nostrils. When the camera comes out he's so excited to have his picture taken he's get a bit too exuberant wanting a close-up.
