in rows-desk had an attached seat for the person in front. If the last person pulled their desk back, everyone in the row had to pull their's back. They also had ink holes which we didn't use-expect to put Kleenex down. Prang crayons, PeeChee folders . What do you remember? Oh and those toilet paper sheets that were in a box in the stalls. It was like whipping your bum with tissue paper

My wife chides me sometimes, telling me I would have made a good professor.

(8,203 posts)yes, ink wells, and yes..ink pens and ink..our elem. school had 3 classrooms..2 grades in each classroom..we had the alphabet on the wall in front..and learned cursive through much practice with those pens and within the lines of the paper..
Anecdotally - this one fellow behind me, 6th grade.we rode the school bus together, he flicked his ink pen and the ink spattered on the back of my pretty white blouse..yes, I can see it like it was yesterday..I know his name, but will not say to protect Richards reputation..we ALL went through high school together..small community..(he really was a good kid, as I recall)..you do have to know..I was a spoiled brat. so, I probably said something...so there is that!!! I am still a brat, just ask hubby...

(129,746 posts)They didn't have a hinged lid but there was a space under the desktop for books. They always had names and initials carved into them. Later there were desks with hinged formica tops and space for books inside. Blackboards were black, sometimes green and used chalk - I'm so old that I never saw whiteboards with ink markers, even in college. In college we had desks that were connected to the chairs and the top just flipped up, no storage space.

(302 posts)At the sounding, us (elementary school) kiddos were ushered outside next to the nearest avenue, whereupon we squated on the sidewalk with our heads facing moving traffic until the siren-sounding stopped. Some few (of the nicer) teachers offered apple-brown-betty custard (afterwards) in tiny bowls, to calm our frayed nerves...good times (!).
