Peak Bloom!

The National Park Service announced yesterday (Thursday) that the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin on the National Mall in Washington DC have reached peak bloom.

According to the NPS, peak bloom date is defined as the day when 70% of the Yoshino Cherry (Prunus x yedoensis) blossoms are open. Peak bloom varies annually depending on weather conditions.

The Yoshino trees typically bloom for a period of several days. The length of the blooming period depends on weather conditions. Cool, calm weather can extend the length of the bloom, and a rainy, windy day can bring an abrupt end to the ephemeral blossoms.

That was in 1968. I was stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland, and several of us made a special trip into DC just to see the bloom. Spectacularly lovely. I remember hearing on the radio that they were blooming "early." It was the Sunday before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. After that, the Fort was on lockdown for several days as rioting occurred in DC. Definitely a bittersweet memory. Thanks for posting the photo!

…one of the prettiest sight on the planet. We lived in he DC area for 8 years, which made it easy to see them at peak times.

I was also lucky enough to see this in Japan while stationed there for 2 years with the Air Force nurse corps.

I always try to select a seat on the right side of the plane so that on takeoff/landing at National Airport (never call it by that newer name) I get the view of the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin.

Of course The Tidal Basin. Happy Sigh, sooo exquisite!

There was a cool on line map (I saw '20 or '21) that showed you where the Cherry Trees were blooming
all around DC
, and which kinds!

While no where near as spectacular I know one of prettiest places in Riverside Pk, NYC to see Crab Apple, and Cherry Tree blossoms even if it's next to the highway.
And they're scattered around Central Park. Plus the whole set in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, and a very pretty area bear the woodsy part of the New York (Bronx) Botanical Garden, too. 🥰🙂🥰🙂🥰 🌸🌳🌸🌳🌸

I went there with friends many years ago for a picnic under the blooming trees. We were freezing cold, but it was beautiful.

Newark's cherry blossom festival is April 1-16. Free admission.
