5 + (1x10) =15
If it is something else, I'd like an explanation.
Maybe the answer is "heart attack."

(76,132 posts)3 cokes are 30, so 10 cents a piece.
A coke & 2 burgers is 20. 20 minus 10 is 10, 10 divided by 2 burgers is 5 cents a piece.
Burger & 2 chips are 9, so chips are 2 cents a piece
A burgers plus (chips TIMES a coke) is 5 + (2 × 10) or 5 +20 = 25.
sl8
(17,088 posts)The burger is combined with 2 pairs of chips.
ProfessorGAC
(76,132 posts)I missed the doubled up chips. My bad.
That sure changes it, doesn't it?

(17,088 posts)I figured the answer as 15. I'm curious as to why that's wrong.
ProfessorGAC
(76,132 posts)...I get that, too.

(76,132 posts)Multiplication/Division always comes before addition/subtraction, unless the subordinate operation is in parentheses. The mnemonic is PEMDAS. (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Substration.)
So, it's 5 plus 1 times 10.
I got it wrong because I didn't notice it was 2 pairs of chips, not 2 chips.
Sanity Claws
(22,363 posts)You multiply 1 times 10, which equals 10.
You then add 5. So total is 15. Right?
ProfessorGAC
(76,132 posts)So did Si8. But, Si8 was told that's wrong. We don't get why.
But yes, based on PEMDAS, it would be 15, assuming we're not missing something like I did with the pairs of chips.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)You and whoever said
15 are right !!?!!!
I screwed up majorly and believed someone
. Sorry!!!!
BTW, you'd never try and add the hamburger 5 to the chips 1, correct? Which would equal 16. (10x1) + 5+1
ProfessorGAC
(76,132 posts)The chips were used up in multiplying it by the Coke.
If we added them to the 5, we'd be using it twice.

(76,132 posts)...my wintertime occupier of time is subbing math & science.
6th and/or 7th grade go through order of operations.
So, I've been specifically trying to get it understood in a way 11 - 13 year old kids would get.
Not dumbing down, but definitely simplifying.

(42,770 posts)even when no parentheses! Plus observation
