Apparently, some stud finders can detect PVC pipe. It would make sense that the center of the pipe would give the strongest reading.

Of course, if they had verified it was a stud by checking 16" to the left and to the right, this probably wouldn't have happened.

In any event, what kind of an idiot would screw into a pipe of any kind like that?

I always suspect that most of the pics/vids people post are fakes anyway, so I figure this was one of those "Hey, let's do this and take a pic for laughs and clicks."

As far as screwing into a pipe, presumably they didn't realize that while they were doing it. I'm guessing it's the owner or a third party that cut away the drywall, later.

Some stud finders detect density, but not all. I imagine that was the type that these folks used.
