Then they will hit you with a big charge once they know it works.

You did the right thing calling your credit card company.

Bank caught a mysterious charge of $15 and the fraud dept called me right away. They said that the folks intending to fraud your account will start with small amounts like that, and will escalate if not caught. I check my account online every day.

Offshore charges are how the banks pick this shit up a lot of the time.

My CC company called me to ask if I'd been out of the country lately.

My card was hit for over $1000 in London. I have no idea how that happened, since my card is always in my possession, it was a new card, and lastly I've never even been to London.

Now that mining crypto has fallen out of favor, I suppose crooks will go back to hacking big corporations for credit card numbers.

after having the same one for more than 30 years. Fortunately, there have been no fraudulent charges because AMEX is very good at fraud detection, but it’s still a pain.

But a bank (big, big, big) we don't use wrote to say that someone was trying to open accounts under our name, tried a couple of times but was shut down. THe bank wouldn't really say how/why/what on their end but that we needed to be careful.

They called BofA, who contacted me.

I said it certainly wasn’t me and they immediately closed my acct and sent me a new card.

I’m positive they acquired my card info by skimming it when I was filling up at a gas station. Never again will I pay at the pump—it’s safe if I pay inside.

Live and learn but I was impressed by how fast BofA contacted me. 👍👍
